Major West Ham transfer twist after terms of landmark deal agreed

The Guardian have claimed that West Ham United are anxious about failing to sign Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes having been linked with the Portuguese star for the majority of the window - because he has been offered to rivals Tottenham. The club acted after the 21-year-old Benfica midfielder was offered to them by Jorge Mendes, the agent who has historical links to their manager, José Mourinho.

West Ham also offered a one-and-a-half-year loan deal, but their obligation to buy amounted up to £33m and the percentage of games to trigger the clause would be less than Chelsea's.

The 21-year-old had been discussing a move to West Ham but, after Spurs intervened on Thursday, talks escalated and the Portugal worldwide is ready to move to north London.

'I couldn't tell you since I have come straight from training to the press conference.

"More importantly, he's a young player for the future and he has a good pedigree".

West Ham are also closing in on the return of Republic of Ireland global Darren Randolph, with goalkeeper having been identified as a problem position since Roberto's struggles earlier in the season.

"If the boss arrives with a solution that can help us to face these hard months that we are going to have ahead of us then [it is] welcome", Mourinho said on Friday.

Portuguese journalist Filipe Dias explains to the Transfer Talk podcast why Benfica are ready to sell Gedson Fernandes in January.
