Trump warns Iran not to kill protesters, door still open to talks

It was a response to US President Donald Trump ordering the assassination by drone strike of General Qassem Soleimani, who was the most prominent and revered commander of Iran's military.

On Sunday, the protesters in Tehran started gathering at a popular landmark the Azadi (Freedom) Square, where they are demanding the resignation of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini.

"Khamenei enforcers firing teargas to disperse crowds of Iranian protesters gathering at Tehran's Azadi Square", Borzou Daragahi, an worldwide correspondent for The Independent, tweeted on Sunday, sharing a video clip from the demonstration.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday that Iran's acknowledgment that it shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane was a step in the right direction but wanted those responsible to be held to account. There can not be another massacre of peaceful protesters. Trudeau also narrated his experience from the meeting with the plane crash victims' families.

Iran's Foreign Ministry later summoned the British ambassador over his "illegal and inappropriate presence" at the protest, it said on its Telegram channel.

"Can confirm I wasn't taking part in any demonstrations!" he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted video of the protests in Iran, saying: "The voice of the Iranian people is clear".

Over the previous three days, Iranian military and political leaders had repeatedly declared it was impossible that Iranian air defenses had shot down the plane.

"Let this serves as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans or American assets, we have.targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD", Trump said.

"Armed Forces' internal investigation has concluded that regrettably missiles fired due to human error caused the horrific crash of the Ukrainian plane [and] death of 176 innocent people", he said.

The protests come after a moment of unity in Iran over the U.S.'s slaying of Suleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force and an important leader seen as a bulwark against Islamic State.

Later on Sunday, the governments of Germany, France and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement calling on Iran to return to "fully respect" of the 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA. He added in a tweet that he had left after five minutes when chanting broke out.

The arrest triggered diplomatic protests, with London calling it a violation of global law and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell added his voice to the chorus of condemnation.

This meeting takes place against the backdrop of the looming threat of a new round of tensions between Iran and the West.

Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne will also attend the 3 p.m. event at the Saville Community Sports Centre.

"I am of course outraged and furious that families across this country are grieving the loss of their loved ones", he said.

"Iran lied. Just as they lied about their secret nuclear program, they are lying now about the downing of the Ukrainian aircraft", said Netanyahu.
