Google Wants Chromebooks Running Steam

The recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy Chromebook is one of the few Chrome OS devices with enough power to tackle newer 3D games

We have a wild report from Android Police this morning, as the site claims that Google is working to bring official Steam support to Chrome OS. If it succeeds, it would make Steam the only significant locally-installed gaming store on Chrome OS, giving Valve an advantage over its competitors. It doesn't really work all that well through Crostini, though, but it appears that Google is working on getting Steam supported on Chrome OS.

However, even that is a start, offering Chromebook owners hundreds of titles, from 2D indie games to retro classics, that could potentially run on their machines.

Last week, Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles targeting at least two bases where U.S. military and coalition forces are stationed in Iraq.

With Steam on Chromebooks, you could also stream games from a more powerful gaming PC to a Chromebook using the Steam in-home streaming feature, turning a Chromebook into an affordable portable gaming device, regardless of its specs (it just needs a reliable network connection).

The interview, which was conducted at last week's Consumer Electronics Show, discusses how Google and, allegedly, Valve are aiming to have Steam run as a native app on Chrome OS devices, which include the hugely popular Chromebook laptops. Add to that the fact that there aren't exactly an overwhelming number of games available on Steam with Linux compatibility. Google now has the Stadia to focus on in terms of gaming and it might take a while to work out just how a gaming Chromebook would work. It is not clear if any of these devices will be powered by discrete Radeon graphics from AMD, however, and Liu wouldn't say if we could expect Nvidia or Qualcomm GPUs on Chromebooks anytime soon. The whens and hows of this announcement are all unconfirmed for now, but the new generation of increasingly powerful Chromebooks makes the concept more than viable. If it's true, this will open up Chrome OS to more than mobile game apps for the first time.
