Hundreds of US-bound migrants cross river to reach Mexico

Honduran migrants walking in a group stop before Guatemalan police near Agua Caliente Guatemala on Thursday on the border with Honduras. Hundreds of Honduran migrants started walking and hitching rides Wednesday from the city of San Pedro Sula in a bid

After waiting on a bridge at the Guatemalan border town of Tecun Uman, some migrants began pushing and shoving before being driven back by Mexican security officials, who shut the border crossing and sought to calm the group.

The Suchiate has sometimes been a point for standoffs, as migrants group together for strength in numbers, hoping that they can force their way across the bridge, or wade across the river, to avoid immigration checks in Mexico.

But hundreds appear to have breached police lines and entered Mexico.

Mexican troops fired tear gas to force them back.

On Friday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador offered 4,000 jobs to members of the caravan in an attempt to dissuade them from traveling on to the United States.

They are urging him to let them pass and promise to respect the law.

For its part, Guatemala says several thousand migrants have crossed into its territory from Honduras since Wednesday.

Those crossing the river are part of a 2,000 to 3,500-strong group dubbed "2020 Caravan", evoking previous attempts to cross Mexico en masse to reach the United States border.

Trump threatened in May to impose tariffs on Mexico if the government did not do more to stop them. "It's been exhausting, especially for the children", Honduran migrant Elvis Martinez told AFP news agency.

"They're trying to trick us".

Interior Minister Olga Sanchez said earlier this week that the migrants would not be granted safe conduct passes. Many are expected to be returned to their home countries.

"People have the legal right to apply for asylum in the US unless they can be sent to another safe country via a valid agreement", the statement continued. Mexico agreed to take "unprecedented" steps to curb irregular migration, including deploying the National Guard.

The "safe third country" deals merely send those seeking to avoid violence are merely being sent back to risky places, the lawsuit argues, per the ACLU. Under a deal last summer between President Trump and Guatemala's now-departed President Jimmy Morales, the US government began deporting Honduran and Salvadoran asylum seekers to Guatemala, denying them a right to pursue refugee status in the United States.

Over the weekend, Guatemalan national police and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents assigned to that country rounded up and deported almost 300 who illegally crossed the border, Breitbart Texas reported.
