Pompeo Looks Forward to Meeting with Venezuela's Guaido in Colombia

Juan Guaido rally Venezuela

Venezuela's Juan Guaido has not left Venezuela since February.

Duque, on Twitter, welcomed Guaido to Colombia, saying they would have a private meeting at his presidential residence on Sunday and Guaido would attend Monday's conference.

"I can assure you that my return to our country will be full of good news", he added.

Guaido, who is not allowed to leave his country, arrived three days after Pompeo announced he would travel to Colombia to meet with President Ivan Duque and take part in an anti-terrorism summit.

Guaido arrived in Bogota ahead of the Third Western Hemisphere Counterterrorism Ministerial to be held on Monday when he is expected to also meet with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Guaido has been in a protracted fight with Maduro over the reins of Venezuela that began early past year when Maduro's 2018 re-election was deemed illegitimate and Guaido appointed himself interim president.

He once challenged the travel ban, in February 2016, when he traveled secretly to Colombia and then visited several other countries to put together regional support for his challenge to Maduro.

Human-to-human transmission confirmed in China coronavirus
Coronaviruses are a broad family of viruses, but only six (the new one would make it seven) are known to infect people. Another coronavirus of concern, MERS, emerged in 2012 in Saudi Arabia, appears to spread less easily between people.

"We hope (Guaido will be there"), Pompeo told reporters earlier.

Critics among Venezuela's opposition insist that Chevron's continued presence in the country undercuts the Trump administration's goal of ousting Maduro by providing him a valuable lifeline of badly-needed export dollars.

Guaido has headed the National Assembly for the past year, but he faced a challenge early this month when Maduro supporters used strong-arm tactics to try to prevent his re-election. Opposition lawmakers than voted in Guaido for a second term as congress chief in a separate session.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Maduro reportedly suggested President Trump should lift sanctions on the nation in exchange for possible benefits for US oil companies from the OPEC member state.

The United States has sanctioned those involved in the attempt and Pompeo has said that more will come against the Maduro regime and those responsible for supporting.

"If there is respect between governments, no matter how large the United States is, and there is a dialogue, an exchange of truthful information, make sure we can create a new kind of relationship", he said.

"Very productive meeting with the President of Venezuela", Duque said on Twitter late on Sunday. "Our mission set is to deliver a set of free and fair elections to the Venezuelan people".
