Pelosi slams McConnell trial rules as "deliberately created to hide the truth"

Donald Trump's lawyers call for 'swift' rejection' of impeachment case in eve of trial submission

Senator Chuck Schumer and fellow Democrats immediately objected.

Senators are expected on Tuesday to vote on a rules resolution proposed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that envisions a speedy trial with long days.

The vote is a culmination of disagreement between Democrats and Republicans over what would constitute a fair trial. He called it a "coverup".

Republican senators, who hold the majority, are falling in line behind his plan.

First, the sides must agree on the rules that will govern the trial.

Also look for the surrogates, video calls to supporters and ads created to give them a measure of presence in the early nominating states.

Initial motions: After the Senate adopts the organizing resolution, which will consume Tuesday, the legal teams for Trump and the House on Wednesday will be able to offer motions on housekeeping questions involving matters other than evidence or witnesses. They write that the issues are "directly implicated" by his involvement matters dealing with the first impeachment article, which accuses Trump of abuse of power in his conduct toward Ukraine. "The ethical rules generally preclude a lawyer from acting as an advocate at a trial in which he is also likely a necessary witness".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed his opposition to McConnell's proposals late Monday.

"This is a historic moment", Schumer said. Strict rules have been set that will be new and constraining to many lawmakers - and to Americans watching on television across the country. It's also true that underpopulated rural states get the same number of senators as densely populated urban states.

Samsung plans to set up India's first smartphone display manufacturing unit
The South Korean company told Reuters that it was considering building a factory in India, without elaborating further. That might include tablet devices as well as TVs though the company hasn't confirmed on any of this at the moment.

McConnell has said he will seek to have the trial follow the same structure as that of former President Bill Clinton's in 1999, but the majority leader's outline indicates Republicans want to fast track the trial.

In a brief submitted on Monday, they called the impeachment "a risky perversion" of the constitution.

The House asked Trump to participate, but he declined to have lawyers represent him in impeachment proceedings before the House Judiciary Committee. Trump's effort to get Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election and to cover it up by blocking Congress' access to administration officials and documents for the impeachment inquiry. He is expected to be acquitted by the Senate.

Politicians love to talk, but they've been told: "Members should refrain from speaking to neighboring senators while the case is being presented". They argue that Democrats are subverting the will of voters who elected Trump president in 2016 because they do not like him or his policies, and turning the impeachment process into a partisan tool.

They say that witnesses who did choose to come forward, either publicly or privately, endured public statements from the president that appeared aimed at discouraging them from cooperating.

This poll is different from a Gallup poll that is more favorable toward Trump, with 51 percent of those surveyed saying the president should not be removed from office.

The Constitution gives the House the sole power to impeach a president and the Senate the final verdict by convening as the impeachment court for a trial. "No one can argue that these documents are not directly related to the charges against the president and should be reviewed by the Senate".

Four TV monitors were set up inside the Senate chamber, which will be used to show testimony, exhibits and potentially tweets or other social media, according to a person familiar with the matter but unauthorized to discuss it who spoke on condition of anonymity.

No president has ever been removed by the Senate. But Trump's acquittal is nearly certain because of the 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate.
