January Jobs Report: U.S. Economy Starts 2020 With 225,000 New Jobs

London Mayor Ed Holder

There were more than 15,000 new construction jobs added during the month, and 20,500 new manufacturing ones.

"The blistering pace of hiring seen in Canada between late-2018 and mid-2019 has faded, but today's data suggest the labour market is far from grinding to a halt", RBC senior economist Josh Nye said in a note to investors. In the past year, wages have gone up $1.73/hour (6.4%) and have increased $3.43/hour (13.5%) over the life of our government.

187,000 jobs, 3.5% unemployment, 3% annual wage gain "A stronger-than-consensus increase in jobs, as we expect, would support the risk-on movement in markets, following other stronger USA data releases this week such as ISM manufacturing", economist Veronica Clark wrote.

Initial jobless claims declined by 15,000 to 202,000 in the week ending February 1, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast payrolls would rise by 160,000 jobs in January. Some said the unusually warm weather was likely throwing off the model the government uses to strip out seasonal fluctuations from the data, juicing the numbers. The Federal Reserve on Friday flagged the coronavirus as a risk to the USA economy.

Birds of Prey being renamed after box office woes
The rest of the film is exclusively just about Harley Quinn which may disappoint some that like the other comic book characters. Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level held strong at #5 with $5.5 million for a $298.4 million domestic take just shy of $300 million.

The gain in jobs for the month came as the number of full-time jobs rose by 35,700, while part-time employment fell by 1,200. The department says about a half million fewer jobs were added between the spring of 2018 and the spring of 2019 than initially reported. It may also complicate the argument his Democratic presidential rivals are making that the economy isn't benefiting everyday Americans.

In January, construction employment rose by 44,000, healthcare added 36,000 jobs, while transportation and warehousing added 28,000 jobs. The unemployment rate is calculated from the household survey. The so-called "real" unemployment rate, which factors in those out of the workforce and those who are underemployed, increased 0.2% to 6.9%.

Stephen Moore, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation and economic consultant with FreedomWorks, said that from January 2009 to December 2016, almost 10 million jobs were added to the economy, yet 1.6 million working-age adults left the workforce. For women veterans, the rate was 3.2%, compared to 1.9% in December, BLS said.
