Epic Picture of Mice Fighting on London Tube Platform Wins Photography Contest

Mice Scrapping On London Underground Awarded Wildlife Photographer Of The Year LUMIX People's Choice Award

Rowley's photo "station squabble", which shows two mice grappling over a crumb of food on a subway platform, just won the people's choice award for the London Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

"Just after I took this photo, I was laying down on the platform and the next thing I knew there was this drunk, sweaty guy lying on top of me".

With the dramatic image, Rowley hoped to offer a new perspective on the animals that roam the London Underground, the public transit system in the England region.

Rowley's winning image will be on display at the Natural History Museum in London until May.

"I feel everyone needs to stop and watch mice, pigeons or any other local wildlife", said Rowley. For winning the competition, Rowley - a professional photographer - gets £10,000 - about $13,000.

"I was quite disappointed with what I managed to get at first", he said, adding that the picture "grew" on him over time.

"The shows were temporarily stopped in 2004 due to worldwide pressure, but today the shows continue - twice a day, every day - with hundreds of people paying to watch the orangutans box, dance, play the drums and more", WPY said of the photo. "Therefore, we have to appreciate the commoner species, which is what my urban wildlife photography's all about".

Said Sir Michael Dixon, director of the Natural History Museum: "Sam's image provides a fascinating glimpse into how wildlife functions in a human-dominated environment". The mice's behaviour is sculpted by our daily routine, the transport we use and the food we discard.

"Losing the fight" shows an orangutan in Bangkok, Thailand. The shows were temporarily stopped in 2004 due to global pressure, but today the shows continue -twice a day, every day -with hundreds of people paying to watch the orangutans box, dance, play the drums and more.

"Such shows would be incredibly stressful to orangutans, who are gentle and solitary creatures".
