Deadliest day yet in coronavirus outbreak

Coronavirus Epidemic Death toll mounts to 1,355 in China WHO says'way too early to predict end of COVID-19

WHO has renamed the 2019-nCoV to COVID-19, under agreed guidelines between WHO, the World Organisation for Animal Health and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to represent the entire viral outbreak under one category as "Corona Virus Disease" (COVID).

The province reported a dramatic spike in confirmed virus cases Thursday, raising the total number of nationwide infections to almost 60,000 after Hubei authorities changed the way they count infections.

China has ousted high-ranking officials in its Hubei province amid widespread outcry over the continuing coronavirus outbreak.

There was a happy ending in sight for another cruise ship, the MS Westerdam, which Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Guam and the Philippines had refused to let dock over fears one of its 1,455 passengers and 802 crew might have the virus.

The biggest cluster of cases outside China is on a cruise ship quarantined off the Japanese port of Yokohama, with 175 of about 3,700 people on board having tested positive. "I've asked others who say they are napping a lot".

China's military is sending 2,600 additional medical personnel to Hubei to help with virus control efforts in Wuhan, state news broadcaster CCTV said on Thursday. Uncertainty about the virus, which emerged in Hubei's capital Wuhan late a year ago and has spread to 24 other countries, has shaken up markets over the past weeks.

The city government has also been under fire for its heavy-handed treatment of eight medical personnel accused of "spreading rumors" about the new flu-like virus at the end of a year ago, including doctor Li Wenliang, who died from the disease on Friday.

In an unprecedented measure to contain the disease, recently named COVID-19, the Chinese government has placed the hardest-hit cities - home to more than 60 million - under lockdown.

The Chinese yuan slipped against the dollar in offshore trade, while stocks in Asia also faltered as the latest update on the spread of the virus provided a grim reminder to investors that the epidemic remains a potent threat to the global economic outlook.

A Xinhua commentary chided some Western media for "racist reporting" on the coronarivus.

The deadly novel coronavirus has now got its official name.

With companies laying off workers and supply chains from the vehicle industry to smartphones disrupted, China's economy is taking a big hit.
