First case of Coronavirus confirmed in London

"One further patient in England has tested positive for novel coronavirus (Covid-19), bringing the total number of cases in the United Kingdom to nine", Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said in a statement.

"As soon as I knew I had been exposed to a confirmed case of coronavirus, I contacted my GP, NHS 111 and Public Health England", the 53-year-old said.

Prof Paul Cosford, from Public Health England, told the BBC his teams were doing their best to contain the spread.

The 83 people quarantined just under two weeks ago at Arrowe Park Hospital, in Merseyside, have all tested negative for the infection, now named Covid-19, which has killed 1,115 worldwide.

The group were the first to be flown out of Wuhan city in China - the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak - by the Foreign Office and back to the UK.

"What we should be doing is taking sensible precautions we would normally take in the winter season", he said.

In a statement on his release from hospital, Walsh, a scout leader, said: "I want to give a big thank you to the NHS who have been great throughout and my thoughts are with everyone around the world who continues to be affected by the virus".

"At the moment the numbers we are seeing out of China are so variable that it is really hard to put a fixed figure", he said.

"There will not be general open-ended or ongoing equivalence negotiations on financial services", Barnier told MEPs in Strasbourg .

Steve Walsh was treated at the specialist infectious diseases unit at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London, but has now been given the all-clear.

Britain said on Wednesday (Feb 12) the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country had risen to nine, saying the latest patient had caught the virus in China.

The first case of the killer coronavirus has been confirmed in London. The individual acquired the virus in China.

The total number of people infected with the deadly virus has risen to 47 in Singapore and it is by far the highest number of cases reported in any other country other than China.

And two Britons were among another39 people newly diagnosed with the virus on the Diamond Princess cruise ship docked in Japan - bringing the number infected on board to 175.

Most people who test positive for the virus experience mild symptoms, including cough, fever and shortness of breath. One was a quarantine officer who had been checking on passengers, it is believed.

Mr Walsh contracted coronavirus on a business trip to Singapore and unknowingly passed it on to 11 other people - five of whom then returned to the UK.

Of the 44,730 cases in China, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed 33,366 were in the Hubei Province, where Wuhan is located.
