Trump urges senators not to pass Iran war resolution

"Congress has got to reassert our constitutional role in matters of war and peace", he said. "Don't let it happen!"

"Just as we have successfully sent Iran this strong signal of our strength and resolve, a blunt and clumsy War Powers resolution would tie our own hands", McConnell said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, argued on Tuesday that passage in the House and Senate will send a warning to the White House, even if the President vetoes the measure.

The measure has support from GOP Sens.

"We should not be at war with Iran unless Congress votes to authorize such a war", Kaine told CNN ahead of the vote.

The Senate on Wednesday debated and avanced the measure-introduced last month by Sen.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., joined by, from left, Sen.

Under the U.S. Constitution, the president serves as the commander in chief of the military, while Congress has the sole power to declare war.

World Health Organization urges continued alert against new coronavirus
In Japan, 39 new cases were confirmed on a cruise ship under quarantine at Yokohama, bringing the total to 174 on the ship. Most of the cases have been in Hubei, where about 56 million people have been placed under virtual quarantine .

The eight Republicans voting in support of proceeding to debate on the measure were Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Todd Young of Indiana, Mike Lee of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.

While there's some merit to Trump's argument that Democrats are only talking checks on presidential powers because he is president, several Republicans in both the House and the Senate who are normally in his corner have thrown their support behind Kaine's proposal.

In the almost two decades since the September 11 attacks, US lawmakers have revisited the issue of congressional approval for conflicts with little success. The prospect of military action against Iran has consequences that ought to be considered by the full Congress on behalf of the people it represents.

"The last thing this country should do is rush into or blunder into another war in the Middle East", Kaine said. John Thune, said Trump's killing of Soleimani was justified, calling the war powers resolution "an ill-advised and potentially problematic response to the president's action". In 2006, Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate after Americans became exhausted of the war in Iraq - but they not only failed to end the war, then-President George W. Bush doubled down with a "surge" of troops to that country, deepening and lengthening USA involvement in combat there.

In fact, that was one of the many rationales that White House officials offered for the Soleimani assassination in January - Trump even at one point suggested Soleimani was plotting to strike as many as four US embassies.

Senate action on the war powers resolution follows a number of votes in the House of Representatives aimed at addressing rising tensions with Iran.

Once the resolution clears the Senate, it will head to the House where it is expected to pass.
