Coronavirus cases rise to more than 65,000 globally

China Reports Spike in Virus Cases with New Way of Counting

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in China has reached 1,380. The new block of clinical cases may date back days or weeks. Out of the 5,090 new cases, 3,095 were diagnosed in this manner.

There hasn't been a "significant change in the trajectory of the outbreak" of COVID-19, global health officials said Thursday, even as China reported thousands more cases under new criteria that officials adopted, Japan reported its first death from the disease and the number of USA cases continued to climb.

As of Friday, the number of reported cases outside of China were Japan (203), Hong Kong (53), Singapore (50), Thailand (33), South Korea (28), Taiwan (18), Malaysia (18), Germany (16), Vietnam (16), Australia (15), the United States (14), France (11), Macau (10), the UK (nine), the UAE (eight), Canada (seven), India (three), the Philippines (three), Italy (three), Russian Federation (two), Spain (two), Cambodia (one), Finland (one), Nepal (one), Sri Lanka (one), Sweden (one) and Belgium (one), according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Health officials in Hubei, the epicenter of the 2-month-old outbreak, said they changed their detection methods from a laboratory test to computerized body scans.

Meanwhile, Japan confirmed its first coronavirus death on Thursday while a cruise liner quarantined off a Japanese port has more than 200 people confirmed with the disease.

The death toll from the coronavirus is higher than the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002-03, which is believed to have killed 774 people and sickened almost 8,100 in China and Hong Kong.

The passengers cheered as they walked toward buses to take them to the airport and waved goodbye to other passengers watching from the ship's deck.

The health commission has said that the change was aimed at identifying suspected cases so they can be treated more quickly, though experts also saw it as a reflection of the crush of people seeking treatment and the struggle to keep up with a backlog of untested samples in Hubei and its capital, Wuhan, where the disease first surfaced in December.

Speaking at a World Health Organization news conference, Dr Michael Ryan explained that medical professionals in Hubei province - the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak - had begun classifying suspected cases based on chest imaging alone, prior to laboratory confirmations.

Officials said the epidemic is still intensely centered in China.

Heilongjiang province in the northeast reported two new deaths, with the other fatalities in the provinces of Anhui and Henan and the municipality of Chongqing.

The outbreak was traced to a live animal market in Wuhan, though scientists are still exploring its origins and what species might have served as a natural reservoir for the pathogen.

Authorities in Hubei have been accused of concealing the gravity of the outbreak.

"We are a little disappointed that we haven't been invited in and we're a little disappointed in the lack of transparency coming from the Chinese", Larry Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, told reporters.
