Health officials in Hubei province said 242 people had died from the flu-like virus on February 12, the fastest rise in the daily count since the pathogen was identified in December, and taking the total number of deaths to more than 1,350.

The province's health commission also repeated a huge jump in new cases, saying a further 14,840 cases had been detected in Hubei, the epicentre of the outbreak, over the 24-hour period to midnight on Wednesday (16:00 GMT).

Among the new cases, 3,095 were diagnosed using CT scans - the new testing method - while the rest were confirmed with the traditional diagnostic process that uses nucleic acid tests.

Cases of coronavirus are not rising dramatically outside China apart from in passengers on a cruise liner now quarantined off a Japanese port, according to a senior World Health Organisation [WHO] official. This is the third death outside mainland China - the Philippines and Hong Kong have reported a death each, reports Reuters.

That brings the total fatalities in China to at least 1,483. A team of health officials will board the ship to conduct health checks on the 1,455 passengers and 802 crew members before they will be allowed to finally disembark.
