Medtronic withdraws 300K insulin pumps after death, 2K lesions

FDA recalls some Medtronic Mini Med insulin pumps

The FDA announced an worldwide Class 1 recall of 322,005 Medtronic's MiniMed 600 Series Insulin Pumps that can cause the user to receive an incorrect amount of insulin.

Model 630G (MMT-1715), all lots before October 2019. This defect is caused by a retainer ring that doesn't properly lock in the insulin cartridges.

The FDA says one person has died, 2,175 people have received injuries and there have been more than 26,000 complaints.

The FDA identifies a Class I recall as the most serious, where exposure to the product may result in death or adverse health consequences. Severe hyperglycemia can lead to loss of consciousness, seizure or death.

The insulin pumps are used by people with Type 1 diabetes to deliver insulin to manage the disease, which causes your glucose levels to fluctuate.

But the number of new infections nationally was down nearly 20% from the day before, from 3,062 to 2,478. Meanwhile, WHO sent an advance team to China this week for an worldwide mission to examine the epidemic.

Anyone using any of the recalled pumps should examine the retainer ring.

Medtronic began directly notifying patients and doctors on November 21, 2019, that there were potential problems with the pumps. If the reservoir doesn't lock into the pump or if the retainer rink is loose, damaged or missing, customers should stop using the pump and contact Medtronic for a replacement.

For more information, patients can call 24-hour Medtronic Technical Support at 877-585-0166. "The retainer ring can be broken, for example, as a result of dropping or bumping your pump on a hard surface". If the reservoir locks in place correctly, Medtronic says to continue using the pump.
