Italy’s coronavirus toll OVERTAKES China with 427 new deaths

Italy records more COVID-19 deaths than China

An additional 427 people have died in Italy in the last 24 hours alone, bringing the nation's overall coronavirus death toll to 3,405 as of Thursday - surpassing China's official death toll, as reported by the Chinese communist government.

The World Health Organization warned, though, that the virus is spreading quickly in Africa, from about five countries a week and a half ago to 35 of the continent's 54 nations - an "extremely rapid evolution", said WHO Africa chief Dr Matshidiso Moeti.

The total number of cases in Italy rose to 47,021 from a previous 41,035, an increase of 14.6 per cent, the Civil Protection Agency said.

A grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic as Italy becomes the country with the largest death toll number.

The U.S. warned Americans to avoid all global travel and told citizens overseas to return now or face an "indefinite" absence, and California's governor asked all 40 million residents to stay home, to try to slow a pandemic toll that on Friday surpassed 10,000 people worldwide.

The COVID-19 illness causes mild or moderate symptoms in most people, but severe symptoms are more likely in the elderly or those with existing health problems.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has approved the anti-malarial drug chloroquine for use as a treatment against the virus.

The Johns Hopkins University database put the number of deaths in Iran at 1,284 with total number of confirmed cases at 18,407.

Both Netflix and YouTube, which say they have experienced a surge in demand since lockdowns began, have promised to reduce the default image quality of streaming video in Europe to ease pressure on the internet.

In the United States, the infections surged with over 11,500 known cases and at least 186 deaths.

The battle is only just beginning across the rest of the world, with the shadow of the virus lengthening across Africa.

While cases have continued to decline in China where the disease originated from, cases have continued to soar in Europe which is now the epicenter for the outbreak.
