'Asymptomatic' COVID-19 carriers often lose sense of smell

A coronavirus warning sign

"People hadn't been talking about it [as a symptom], so I wasn't looking out for it".

Though the doctors could not say for sure when the loss of smell and taste first appeared in these patients, they suspect that the symptoms manifested as a later stage of the infection, Streeck added. If a person who didn't have conditions such as hay fever or chronic allergies did develop a sudden loss of taste or smell, that could "warrant serious consideration for self-isolation and testing of these individuals", the AAOS said. Since then, I've had colleagues from around the world saying: "'That's exactly what we're seeing.' They've been trying [to raise awareness], but it hasn't been picked up", the Washington Post quoted Claire Hopkins, president of the British Rhinological Society.

Some experts said it is hard to assess whether the loss of smell or taste are signs of infection with the COVID-19 virus, which emerged in China late previous year. The letter, signed by Kumar and sent to public health authorities, urged doctors treating people with anosmia to don personal protective equipment while treating them.

"With the pandemic now going on, if you are young or old and have an unexplained smell loss come on quite quickly, even in the setting of minimal respiratory symptoms, you should be highly suspicious that you might have acquired infection with coronavirus or another respiratory virus", said Richard Harvey, vice president of the Australia and New Zealand Rhinologic Society.

"Many patients reporting this have mild [COVID-19] symptoms, sometimes a little bit of cough and sometimes a fever, but there are patients who are not reporting any other symptoms". They also pointed to the cases out of Germany, where more than 2 in 3 patients said the lost their sense of smell. "Therefore, there are lots of carriers around".

"The sense of taste and smell are very closely related", he said.

Anecdotal evidence is rapidly accumulating from sites around the world that anosmia and dysgeusia are significant symptoms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. "It is obviously speculation at the moment", Kumar says.

Man dies of hantavirus in China
It can be contracted if someone touches their eyes, nose or mouth after touching rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials. According to the CDC, controlling the rodent population is the primary method of preventing the Hantavirus from spreading.

But this coronavirus is a tiny particle so it can reach that area, and it actually affects the lining and the receptors in the roof of the nose. They don't have a good sense of smell. "Our twins are fantastically committed, enthusiastic health research participants who have already been studied in unprecedented detail, putting us in a unique position to provide vital answers to support the global fight against COVID-19". One of them was a school teacher named Robert, from the north of England, who was eating candy over the weekend when he realized he couldn't taste or smell anything.

But now it has become clear that the loss of smell can be a clear indicator you may be carrying the virus, even if you are not sick.

Specifically, it looks to see if the user has any symptoms of the disease.

Using the new symptom as a screening tool is a delicate task, experts noted.

Unable to get a coronavirus test due to the U.K.'s testing limitations, Robert turned to Twitter on Monday night.

If you wake up feeling otherwise fine but without your sense of smell, could that be a sign you've been infected with coronavirus?

A third specialist, Clemens Wendtner, added two details: the loss of smell is transient, usually lasting a few weeks at most, and it is independent of the severity of clinical illness and the presence of congestion.
