Coronavirus: FFA postpones A-League season

Easy come easy go: Corey Norman Ben Hunt willing to take pay cuts to keep game afloat

The Hyundai A-League has two parts; the top six teams after the 27-week regular season compete for the title in the playoffs.

Australian soccer's A-League yesterday suspended its season indefinitely, bringing an end to all professional soccer competitions in Australia and New Zealand until the COVID-19 pandemic passes.

FFA chief executive James Johnson announced the decision on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Newcastle defeated Melbourne City 2-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium.

"This is the unanimous decision of the FFA Board and the Hyundai A-League clubs to postpone the competition."The decision has been made in consultation with the national working committee for coronavirus."The FFA will review the postponement in a couple of weeks with a date set for April 22."The goal at this stage is to reschedule games as soon as it is reasonably possible to do so in order to complete the season".

"As a national competition, a competition that's played in nearly all parts of Australia and also played in New Zealand, mission complicated became mission impossible", said Johnson.

With all domestic and worldwide football across the country now suspended, Johnson admitted the financial impacts will be drastic.

"We'll feel the financial pressure on the game at all levels".

"The game will survive this, of that I'm absolutely sure", he said.

‘Coronavirus party’ in Kentucky results in 1 testing positive: ‘Makes me mad’
Another WHO official has said that in order to combat the deadly coronavirus outbreak, just lockdowns are "not enough". The Bullitt County Health Department said the employees live in other counties but didn't identify the counties.

"Whenever there is a crisis or a big challenge, I think you've got to look for the opportunities and there are things we can improve in the game at all levels".

The 12 Super League clubs and representatives from the sport's governing body met via conference call on Tuesday to discuss the next steps in the wake of the government's decision to place the country on lockdown on Monday evening amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak.

Rimmer added: "We will also be updating other sections of the game with the latest thinking regarding the suspension of the season, as the sensible approach is clearly to continue working on various scenarios while acknowledging the suspension is going to be considerably longer than the three-week period we had initially confirmed".

The AFL suspended their season until at least June after just one round.

The league still plans to complete the remaining 16 rounds at some point this year, after cutting it from the usual 23, but not before June.

"We respect the decision in what are extraordinary times for everyone".

"That said, the health and safety of our fans, players, volunteers and staff has always been the overriding consideration for us", he said.
