Italy registers 63927 coronavirus cases, day-to-day slowdown of deaths

Italy Reports 63,927 Coronavirus Cases, Death Toll At 6,077

Medical personnel at the Giovanni XIII retirement home in Rome undergo tests after the death of a patient.

Italy may have 10 times the number of virus cases than officially reported, the emergency chief Angelo Borrelli told daily La Repubblica in an interview.

The total number of confirmed cases in Italy rose to 63,927 on Monday from a previous 59,138, an increase of eight percent, the Civil Protection Agency said, the lowest rise in percentage terms since the contagion came to light on 21 February.

Italy reported 743 new corona-virus deaths on Tuesday ending a two day streak of declining totals.

The Civil Protection Agency initially said 601 people died yesterday, but the agency head told reporters the real number was 602.

"Of the 50,418 people who are positive, some 26,522 are now under home isolation - being asymptomatic or with light symptoms - another 3,204 are in intensive care, and all the other hospitalized in ordinary wards", he specified.

Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases rise to 390: ICMR
Walmart Inc's Flipkart has suspended services, the Indian e-commerce firm said in a notice on its website as the lockdown began. PM Modi chaired the meeting where he was flanked by ministers who all kept a safe distance from each other as well as him.

The latest data comes as a disappointment to a country that has been in lockdown for two weeks, with schools, bars and restaurants shut and Italians forbidden from leaving their homes for all but essential needs.

All businesses deemed nonessential will have to remain closed until April 3, Conte said.

Conte said he is hoping to do away with the lockdown as soon as possible.

According to Goldman Sachs' forecast Tuesday, the Italian economy could shrink 11% this year. In Italy, the outbreak started merely a month ago.

Underscoring the problem, the regional governor of Veneto, Luca Zaia, ordered the confiscation of ventilators at veterinaries, saying they could be converted to human use. That would raise the total number to over 600,000, the newspaper reported.

Italy has borne the brunt of the outbreak in Europe, and earlier on Tuesday Antonio Misiani, Gualtieri's deputy minister, said the only acceptable conditionality should be that the ESM cash is used "to manage the health and economic emergency".
