The quake hit at a depth of 59 kilometers, USGS added. In Severo-Kurilsk residents felt the tremors in the force 5-6 points, in Yuzhno-Kurilsk (South Kuril Islands) is 3 points.

Did the National Weather Service just issued an erroneous tsunami alert for Hawaii, when USGS and tsunami.gov was on limited staff or closed due to "social distancing" during the coronavirus?

A 7.5 magnitude quake struck in the northern Pacific on Wednesday and forecasters said tsunami waves were possible for the nearest shores. There were no immediate reports of damages.

The quake hit 135 miles south-southeast of Severo-Kurilsk, with a depth of 35 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Spain seeks North Atlantic Treaty Organisation help as virus death toll touches 2700 — Humanitarian assistance
Meanwhile, Madrid took over the public Palacio de Hielo ice skating rink after the morgue in the hard-hit capital city overflowed. Still, Harris said the scope of the global outbreak was "enormous" and that cases were expected to increase "considerably".

Initial estimates from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) indicated that the natural disaster measured 7.8 magnitude, however, this figure was subsequently downgraded.

"A tsunami wave arrived in Severo-Kurilsk at 1515 Sakhalin [region] time (0415 GMT)", Russia's emergency services said.

Retracting the statement, the Centre said, "Tsunami waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters above the tide level". Jones explained it is "deeper and smaller than the quakes" that caused big trans-Pacific tsunamis in the past.

The agency said that non-harmful changes in sea level may occur in some coastal areas of the US. It extends more than 800 miles from the northeastern tip of Japan to the bottom of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The sparsely populated Kuril Islands run from Russia's Kamchatka peninsula to Japan's Hokkaido island, and include four disputed islands, known as the Southern Kurils in Russian Federation and the Northern Territories in Japan.
