"A lot of people stop learning in life, and that's their tragedy".

Sarasota Memorial Hospital could not confirm McNally's death.

Being an openly gay writer, he often wrote plays that tackled topics of homophobia and HIV/AIDS. Over the course of his six-decade career, his work was heralded as a landmark in gay theatre by both critics and audiences alike.

Over the course of his life, McNally was the recipient of four Tony Awards, three Drama Desk awards and a Primetime Emmy award.

McNally, who also received a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2019 and was a 2004 finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his play "A Perfect Ganesh", is arguably the highest-profile figure to succumb to coronavirus thus far. During his travels with Steinbeck's family, he was able to draft the opening act of his work that became And Things Go Bump in the Night.
