Theresa May's top aides take fall for poll debacle, resign

But the ballot-box humiliation has seriously - and possibly mortally - wounded May's leadership just as Britain is about to begin complex exit talks with the European Union. "Boris set to launch bid to be PM as May clings on", echoed the Mail on Sunday.

He appeared to concede that the Conservatives failed to engage enough young people, saying: "Because modern campaigning techniques require ever-narrower targeting of specific voters, and we were not talking to the people who chose to vote for Labour".

"The reason for the disappointing result was not the absence of support for Theresa May and the Conservatives but an unexpected surge in support for Labour", Timothy wrote.

Timothy and Hill had worked for May when she was interior minister, before she became premier in July previous year in the chaotic days that followed the Brexit vote.

Signed by 574,787people at the time of writing, the petition also calls for Theresa May to resign after she lost her parliamentary majority.

Mounting criticism and a spirit of vendetta claimed the scalps of two of May's closest advisers, Fiona Hill and Nick Timothy, who resigned in the wake of the snap election that wiped out the Tories' parliamentary majority.

Ms May has sent her Chief Whip Gavin Williamson to Belfast for talks with his opposite number in the DUP, Jeffrey Donaldson.

May said Barwell would help her "reflect on the election and why it did not deliver the result I hoped for".

"It was a disaster", he said.

But her no-nonsense image crumbled under the scrutiny, as she was forced to backtrack on a key manifesto promise, and offered little in the way of a positive vision to voters.

Martin Selmayr, senior aide to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, responded to the resignations by tweeting the word "bauernopfer" - German for the sacrifice of a pawn in chess.

ARLENE Foster has revealed this morning she plans to fly to London on Tuesday to meet with Theresa May and sort out the Tory-DUP deal. She's now attempting to form a government.

But the DUP added: "Discussions will continue next week to work on the details and to reach agreement on arrangements for the new Parliament".

The arrangement makes some Conservatives uneasy.

Founded by Protestant fireband Ian Paisley at the height of The Troubles in the early 1970s, the DUP is likely to ask for more money to be spent on the region, as well as specific concessions.

The DUP's 10 lawmakers would give May a working majority after her own party failed to win enough seats to govern by itself.

The Northern Ireland party is officially opposed to same-sex marriages and abortions, both which are legal in the rest of Britain.

"I sought, and to be fair to the prime minister, received a categoric assurance that in talking to the DUP that there would be no suggestion of any rollback on LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom", she told reporters. "But I've got to get through the whole thing". "That's not a matter for me", she said.

"I've never seen people more hateful in my life", he said.

"We have a situation in Northern Ireland right now where there has been a political crisis where the Government is the mediator between the DUP and Sinn Fein".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, riding a wave of acclaim for his party's unexpectedly strong showing, has called on May to resign.

Newspaper headlines saw her as just clinging on. The Times newspaper's front page declared "May stares into the abyss".

However, former Conservative party leaders warned against any immediate change, with Iain Duncan Smith saying leadership contest would be a "catastrophe".
