Britain, EU in suspense

An announcement on an agreement may not come until next week as it is thought it will be delayed as a result of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Brexit minister David Davis has insisted the approach to the European Union divorce has not changed, but May has recognised that a broader consensus needs to be built for Brexit and has made clear she would listen to all wings of the party on the issue.

May will host Arlene Foster in Downing Street to discuss terms of the DUP's backing for her minority government, reports the BBC.

Mrs May said nothing to reporters as she left Downing Street by auto shortly after 2.15pm for a trip to France to meet the new French president.

Britain's descent into political crisis just days before the Brexit talks begin has sapped confidence amongst business leaders and infuriated bosses who were already grappling with the fallout from the vote to leave the EU.

Mrs May stressed that Brexit would happen and the timetable remains on course.

It only means that the time left to negotiate a deal is shorter.

Earlier, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble made very similar comments on the possibility of Britain staying in the EU.

She needs DUP support to cling to power after her election fiasco, leaving the European Union's Brexit negotiator wondering when divorce talks will begin.

Talking to reported in Strasbourg, he added: "In my humble opinion, I think that one of the elements of the outcome of the election was certainly not a support of the "hard" Brexit".

Jeremy Corbyn told the first meeting of Labour MPs following the general election that he needed their unity ahead of a possible second election as Theresa May's government "has no mandate and no legitimacy".

Mrs Foster was nearly certain to ask for greater investment in Northern Ireland as part of the deal, though changes to security and legacy issues from the Troubles were unlikely to be included in a pact. They have struggled for years with Irish nationalists, who want the British province to join a united Ireland.

Mr Corbyn is expected to reshuffle his shadow cabinet in the coming days with several senior figures who called for him to step down a year ago after the European Union referendum hinting they are open to a return.

While the DUP are deeply eurosceptic, they have balked at some of the practical implications of a so-called hard Brexit - including the potential loss of an open border with the Republic of Ireland - and the talks were likely to touch on efforts to minimise the potential damage to Northern Ireland.

'It is now unclear if the United Kingdom government will stick to the hard Brexit it announced in her letter of 29 March, or if they will soften their approach after the outcome of the election, ' Mr Verhofstadt said.

"We are going into these talks with the national interest at heart", she said on Monday.

However, a soft Brexit would be a "daft" option, a political analyst told CNBC on Wednesday.

"Both parties, major parties, are hopelessly split on the issue".

Mr Clarke, a prominent Remain voter, dismissed "silly arguments" that this was an attempt to overturn Brexit, saying MPs had settled the question by voting to trigger Article 50 in the last Parliament.
