Nissan assembly plant workers to decide whether to unionize in Mississippi

Nissan's assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, has been the target of UAW organization efforts for well over a year now.

A spokesman for Nissan Motor Co. said late Friday that the union lost a vote by 3,700 eligible workers. The charges could result in a new campaign and election, but Nissan defended the validity of the campaign and final vote. Workers say the company has threatened to close the plant if they join the union, interrogated workers about their union support and promised better conditions if employees oppose the union.

"Our expectation is that the UAW will respect and abide by their decision and cease their efforts to divide our Nissan family", the automaker said in a statement.

European Union extends Russian Federation sanctions over Crimea
Siemens says it wants to buy back the turbines, but Russian contractor Technopromexport says it has not yet received a proposal. The E.U. added three Russian nationals and three companies to its sanctions list over the issue.

The automaker said it learned from process leading up to the union vote and will continue to improve the "direct relationship" it now has with employees.

The vote comes after intense public pressure by both parties. Nissan, meanwhile, was alleged by the UAW and the National Labor Relations Board of intimidating employees ahead of the vote.

Workers at a Nissan assembly plant in MS have rejected union representation, adding to decades of futility by United Auto Workers organizers at foreign-owned auto plants in the American South. The union made some headway by organizing a small group of maintenance workers at Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, but it has still not been able to strike a collective bargaining agreement. "The UAW will continue to be on the frontlines of that fight for all workers". Ahead of the vote, Nissan used the scandal, which the UAW and FCA have pinned on rogue actors, as evidence of the union's alleged corruption.
