UK Lawmakers Reject All 4 Brexit Options

He said Britain could still accept deal agreed by May, reiterating it was "the only way" for Britain to leave the bloc in an orderly way.

A hard core of Brexiteer legislators in May's Conservative Party dismiss this as "Project Fear" and argue for what they call a "clean Brexit".

Pro-European MPs fear that May's refusal to change course is putting Britain at risk of a "no-deal" exit, and they seized the initiative by holding two rounds of votes on possible alternatives.

The votes were not legally binding, but they had been billed as the moment when Parliament might finally compromise.

All four options were rejected, but one lost by just three votes: a plan to leave the EU but keep a permanent customs union.

Motion D (Common market 2.0) was defeated by 282 votes to 261, majority 21, with Motion E (second referendum) rejected by 292 votes to 280, majority 12.

A government analysis leaked to the Daily Mail suggests a "no deal" scenario would undermine Britain's security capabilities, cause a recession, and increase the cost of food by up to 10 percent.

May had already ruled out all the ideas under consideration.

On Monday evening, Parliament will renew its attempt to find an alternative to May's deal. It was backed by opposition parties, plus some of May's Conservatives - mainly those who want to stay in the bloc.

The lack of consensus reflects a Parliament and a Government deeply divided over how - and whether - to leave the EU. "Where the United Kingdom used to be beacon for stability, we are now becoming a laughing stock", he said in open letter to lawmakers published by website Politico.

But Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss said it would be better than a soft Brexit.

Lord King told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme: 'My own personal preference would be to go back to Europe and say we have a clear strategy which is we want to leave without a deal.

Despite the downbeat assessment, Barnier did say that "we can still hope to avoid it" through intensive work in London ahead of an April 10 European Union summit.

So little time, so few options.

The prime minister, who is struggling to hold her party together, warned Sunday night that she faced resignation and a split in the Conservative Party if she agrees to pursue a "soft" Brexit this week.

"Let's not forget first that we have already an agreement, we have already a deal, and it was concluded by Theresa May and the British government and the European Council and European Parliament on November 25 past year, four months ago", he said.

In the next two weeks, Britain is facing crunch domestic and global negotiations that will decide the fate of Brexit and determine the future of generations. Pro-EU legislators argue it is worse than the U.K.'s current status as an EU member.

But that plan was defeated by three votes.

Brussels has set Britain an April 12 deadline to agree to the divorce deal, settle on an alternative or crash out of the European Union. May is expected to try to put her deal to a fourth vote this week.

Mr Macron is also likely to seek assurances that Ireland will protect the EU's single market in the event of a disorderly Brexit. It would have meant Britain remaining part of the European Union single market, but would allow free movement of people across Europe.

Britain voted by 52 percent to leave the European Union in a 2016 referendum, but the process has been mired in divisions over the terms of the divorce and what kind of future ties to seek.

The government, she said, would then abide by the decision of the House of Commons.
