Trump '100 percent' ready to close US-Mexico border

Many who do make their way to the US border. "I am not kidding around", the president said then, plainly exasperated by the migrant flow.

Approximately 11,000 to 12,000 commercial trucks cross the border at Nogales daily, laden with about 50 million pounds of produce such as eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, and berries, he said.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to close the border if Mexico does not stop a surge of people, often traveling as families from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

The threat to close the border, which handled some $612 billion worth of trade in 2018, sent shivers through the economy, and drew warnings from allies of the president.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders talks with reporters outside the White House, Tuesday, April 2, 2019, in Washington.

"Here's the thing: Whether he goes through or not with this nonsense of closing the border, if nothing else, he's emboldening the Chinese in their negotiation", Guajardo said.

Asylum seekers typically undergo what is known as an interview to assess their "credible fear" of returning to their home country.

The Commander-in-Chief was speaking with reporters at the White House when he was asked to comment on his previous remarks regarding a total closure of the US-Mexico border in the coming days.

Her lawyer said she is expected to be freed in early May. "The accused at the same time is also naive and she was exploited". The charge carries a maximum 10-year jail term but the lawyer said she would likely receive a shorter sentence.

Mexican avocados make up 75 percent to 80 percent of USA consumption, and California for about 16 percent, according to data from the Haas Avocado Board. "We hope that that continues, and that we can work with them so we don't have to [close the border]".

But the fact that White House officials are looking at ways to address the fallout of his latest threat shows how real the option has become, at least internally. "Security is more important to me than trade".

Although Trump is making his argument on security grounds, the reality is that there will be an economic element to a border closure, Wilson said.

We spoke to several senior administration figures who described a White House freaked out about the implications of closing the border - both for the USMCA, the president's top legislative priority, and because they believe it will result in an immediate spike in the cost of consumer goods.

"California is just starting, and they have a very small crop, but they're not relevant right now and won't be for another month or so", Barnard cautioned. But Trump has so far refused to back down.

Business groups also chimed in, warning that the US does $1.7 billion in trade each day with Mexico. Exports were valued at $265 billion during the same time period.

In addition to the coveted avocado, the US receives a large amount of other fresh fruit from Mexico - total imports of which were valued at $6 billion in 2017. The biggest import categories from Mexico are cars and trucks, machinery, medical instruments and fossil fuels. It would also prevent thousands of vehicles built in Mexico from landing in USA dealer showrooms.
