US Energy Department To Have The World's Fastest Supercomputer In 2021

Scheduled for delivery in 2021, Frontier will accelerate innovation in science and technology and maintain USA leadership in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.

The contract the government awarded to develop Frontier is valued at more than $600 million. To deliver what is expected to be more than 1.5 exaflops of expected processing performance, the Frontier system is created to use future generation High Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimized, custom AMD EPYC™ CPU, and AMD Radeon™ Instinct GPU processors.

"Frontier's record-breaking performance will ensure our country's ability to lead the world in science that improves the lives and economic prosperity of all Americans and the entire world".

"Frontier will accelerate innovation in AI by giving American researchers world-class data and computing resources to ensure the next great inventions are made in the United States", Perry said. Frontier's overall anticipated processing power was described by the DOE as being able to solve calculations "up to 50 times faster than today's top supercomputers" with a rate that exceeds "a quintillion, or, 10, calculations per second".

"Summit is allowing us to do work that was science fiction a year ago, and we expect to see similar leaps with the extreme speed of Frontier, which will make new science possible that we can't do today", Dan Jacobson, chief scientist for computational systems biology at ORNL, explained.

Trump supports Seoul sending humanitarian aid to North Korea: Blue House
It is only natural for the leader of a country to pursue talks that will contribute to the settlement of outstanding issues. Under the circumstances, it will likely be hard for the two countries to hold fruitful talks.

The IBM supercomputer, called Summit, is now ranked as the fastest computing system in the world, a notch occupied by China's Sunway TaihuLight and Tianhe 2A for five years.

To put things in starker contrast, AMD says that Frontier will have more processing power than the next 160 fastest supercomputers combined. Coincidentally, Aurora too has been developed by DOE along with Intel and Cray Inc.

Frontier will incorporate several novel technologies co-designed specifically to deliver a balanced scientific capability for the user community.

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), a high-performance computing company announced that it is developing the world's fastest computer. The machine will employ a high-bandwidth Infinity Fabric to connect four AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs to one AMD EPYC CPU for every node. Beyond hardware, AMD will provide an enhanced version of ROCm, its open-source programming platform for CPUs and GPUs.
