Alex Morgan sets a scoring record and shakes World Cup

France won the opening match of the World Cup 4-0 against South Korea

USA Today's Nancy Armour wrote a column headlined: "US women owe no apologies for celebrating 13-0 blowout of Thailand".

Go Team USA! Hopefully their next round of on field celebrations will be even more exuberant.

Federation Internationale de Football Association has withdrawn a claim that 1 million tickets have been sold for the Women's World Cup and now says the total includes people paying nothing to attend games, including VIPs and even medical staff.

American star Alex Morgan grabbed five goals while Rose Lavelle and Samantha Mewis netted twice each and Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd also got on the scoresheet in the Group F encounter watched by more than 18,000.

He was also critical of the USA women for showing their hand ahead of games against more formidable opponents.

However the team is under scrutiny for continuing to run up the score and excessive celebration with many critics calling their actions "disrespectful".

The lawsuit, which is still in its early stages, notes that women just earned a roster bonus of just $15,000 for making the 2015 World Cup team, compared to $55,000 for men in 2014.

With goal differential a tiebreaker in the group stage, the USA was incentivized to score as many goals as it could, but the way the team reacted to several goals late in the match has come under fire.

Every goal matters in this tournament and so that's what we were working on in this game.

Here is an excerpt: "You want the Americans to impose the slaughter rule or patronize their opponents by pretending they didn't just tack another goal onto the scoreline?"

"This is high-level competition, and the Americans have no reason to apologize for treating it as such".

Retired American global Taylor Twellman, now an ESPN analyst, tweeted he had zero problems with the scoreline given "this is THE tournament BUT celebrating goals (like 9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you". I love it. But the soccer gods can be cruel and vindictive. It's the World Cup folks.

Former U.S. worldwide Alexi Lalas, another member of the panel, however, defended the Americans.

Morgan became the first player with five goals and three assists in the same match.

The Americans set another tournament record with four goals in six minutes in the second half.

The U.S. plays Chile on Sunday and then plays Sweden next week.

Thailand made its World Cup debut four years ago in Canada, exiting after 4-0 preliminary-round losses to Norway and Germany and a 3-2 victory over the Ivory Coast.
