Canada to ban single-use plastics from 2021

Trudeau made the announcement at a nature preserve in Mont-Saint-Hilaire Monday morning. But plastic bags, cutlery, plates and stir sticks in any case are likely to be abolished.

"You've all heard the stories and seen the photos, and to be honest, as a dad, it's tough trying to explain this to my kids", Trudeau said. "How do you explain dead whales washing up on beaches around the world, their stomachs jam-packed with plastic bags".

The plan right now is to study how other jurisdictions like the European Union bar single-use plastics and put together a list of single-use plastics that will be covered under the ban over the coming months and year, Trudeau said.

It said Canada would also introduce standards for plastic manufacturers and sellers so they become responsible for their products and the resultant trash. "Or albatross chicks photographed off the coast of Hawaii, their bodies filled to the brim with plastic they've mistaken for food".

Later, Trudeau tweeted, "Canadians throw away 3 million tonnes of plastic waste every year".

Plastic pollution primarily affects marine ecosystems, and the prime minister said that Canada should lead the fight against plastic pollution as the country has the world's longest coastline.

Canada now throws out 12 times the plastic it recycles, and there are only about a dozen domestic recycling plants.

Last year, Canada sponsored a G7 ocean plastics charter meant to spur a reduction in plastics use, and in May the United Nations said 180 countries reached a deal to sharply reduce the amount of plastic that gets washed into the oceans.

Renard headers give France a flying start
All 52 games will be available to watch on free-to-air TV in Ireland as RTE and TG4 will broadcast the games between them. Renard made amends after 35 minutes, the powerful central defender thumping a header home for her 21st worldwide goal.

The government has not announced yet as to exactly which plastic items will be banned.

During the last G7 summit, Canada and four other major economies signed a charter calling for full recycling and re-use of plastic products, or burning those products as fuel.

Less than 10 percent of plastic used in Canada gets recycled, according to the country's government.

Chelsea Rochman, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto's department of ecology and evolutionary biology, said there is no question that single-use plastics harm wildlife as they break down in the environment, with potentially toxic effects.

"Copol International is a forward-thinking business that's developing biodegradable food packaging", Trudeau said. Recently the Philippines demanded Canada take back dozens of shipping containers filled with non-recylable plastic garbage exported under falsely labelled permits.

While Trudeau has declared it a top priority, a recent parliamentary report concluded Canada is doing too little to combat climate change, even as government scientists warned the country was warming at twice the global rate.

The government is also in the final stages of passing two bills they argue will tighten environmental assessment criteria for energy projects and also protect the sensitive coast of northern British Columbia from oil spills by banning tanker traffic.
