Dog Treats Linked to Salmonella

The CDC reported it and the FDA are investigating an outbreak of salmonella across 13 states- and it's linked to contact with pig ear dog treats

The CDC and FDA are still investigating.

Even if no people or pets have gotten sick, the bulk pig ear treats should be discarded immediately and any surfaces or utensils - such as food bowls - should be cleaned and sanitized.

So far, 45 individuals in 13 states have been diagnosed with salmonella-related illnesses.

Pet Supplies Plus a chain pet store, with a store located at 1720 Bradford Ln.in Normal is recalling bulk pig-ears sold in open bins.

The bulk pig ear product was distributed to all Pet Supplies Plus locations by different vendors.

Salmonella cases linked to this outbreak have been reported in California, North Dakota, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York and MA. Most of the affected parties reported contact with a dog or contact with a dog treat.

The strain of salmonella that's infecting people is also resistant to multiple drugs, officials said.

The CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are now investigating the link between the pig ear dog treats and salmonella.

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken samples of the dog treats in question and identified some strains of the salmonella bacteria, however, officials from the health department say it is still unclear if those particular strains are responsible for causing the outbreak. Twelve individuals have been hospitalized and no deaths were reported, according to the CDC.

Salmonella is an intestinal infection that can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic. The CDC says dogs don't always show that they're not feeling well with a salmonella infection, but they usually have diarrhea and may have blood or mucus in their stool.

The CDC suggests that people wash their hands after coming into contact with pet food and treats, as well as avoiding contact with their pet's mouths.

Your dog could be infected, too.
