Government clashes with its own business advisers over no-deal Brexit

Prime Minister Theresa May

The Tánaiste says there's no evil plan hiding on a shelf that would solve the issue of the border with Northern Ireland.

He said people buying from the United Kingdom in the event of a no-deal Brexit is "the equivalent of buying product from a third country outside of the European Union, outside of our single market, where tariffs may apply, where diffierent tax rates may apply".

The update, released yesterday evening, Tuesday, July 9, outlined the consequences of the UK's departure from the European Union on Ireland, as well as the Government's preparations to mitigate and limit the impact on Ireland.

However, Bloomberg has reported that the Government will accept in documents that checks will need to happen on or near the border, especially for livestock.

In the report's preface, committee chairman, Fine Gael TD Joe Carey, says that from the day of the Brexit referendum its members were concerned that the unintended outcome would be the risk that the border region would suffer "a loss of funding and support, with the possible return of a "hard border" with all that entails".

A no-deal Brexit also risks significantly undermining wider community relations and political stability in Northern Ireland, with potential related security concerns, the document said.

Elina Svitolina books Wimbledon semi-final showdown with Simona Halep
Serving for the place in the semis, Simona held at 30 with a forehand victor , taking the set 6-1 and staying on the title course. There were nerves, understandably, and Gauff's serve came under immediate scrutiny with Halep securing a break in the first game.

It says that frictionless cross-border trade could end, with tariffs and customs checks leading to greater costs and disruption for businesses.

Additional Irish police resources have been deployed to border areas in recent months, part of a general increase in recruitment, the updated plan said. "We are prepared for a no deal Brexit but will work hard to avoid such an outcome".

"A no-deal Brexit should not even be remotely considered by the UK Government".

Significant short-term risks identified on Tuesday included delays at ports that would disrupt trade not just to and from Britain, but via the British "landbridge" that some 60% of Irish exporters use to move goods to mainland Europe. For people living in border counties and in Northern Ireland, this will be really hard.

A no-deal Brexit has been labelled an "ugly prospect" by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney.

"There is no sugar coating of that message".
