Bianca Andreescu upsets Serena Williams in US Open final

Serena Williams US Open 2019

"Get used to it", Andreescu replied with a smile.

Williams is aiming to equal Australian Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles by beating Andreescu, which would then give her the opportunity to become the leading major victor at the Australian Open in January - where a stadium is named after Court. "I watched her win most of her Grand Slam titles", Andreescu, seeded 15th, said.

"I don't think I was ever as composed as I am now, or even a year ago", said Andreescu.

"I can definitely get used to this feeling". But even so, Andreescu only turned 19 in June, and thus must have been conceived at around the time that Williams was bundling the underpowered Hingis out of her path in that first US Open final. Serena Williams hits a return victor.

But the world number 15 was clinical when the next chance arrived, picking out the left corner of the court to restore her advantage, dealing Williams another huge setback.

Andreescu, seeded 15th, lost a double break in the second set before taking her third match point. She's playing one match for history.

"It's so hard to explain (what the win means) in words", Andreescu said.

It wasn't a pretty match for Williams, who struggled on her serve throughout.

For 23 minutes at the end of the second set, it appeared there might be a miraculous fightback, though, as the pressure finally got to the previously indomitable Andreescu, who had led 5-1 in the second. "She came up to me in the locker room, she said some really nice things, which I'll cherish for a really, really long time", Andreescu said about the 37-year-old Williams.

"There's so many different emotions in finals", Williams said after her 6-3, 6-1 semifinal victory over No. 5 Elina Svitolina.

"It's just surreal. I really don't know what to say", said Andreescu after defeating Belinda Bencic in the semifinals on Thursday. "I appreciate what Bianca has done, though". Ms. Williams had to drop out of the Rogers Cup last month due to an injury and was on the bench in tears.

Andreescu is the first player to claim the US Open title on debut, becoming the first player since Monica Seles at Roland Garros 1990 who claimed the Major title in only the fourth try. The Canadian was leading 3-1.

For many Canadians, she seemed to come out of nowhere.

Everywhere else in the world - including the United Kingdom and Ireland - is absolutely fine to watch Bianca Andreescu vs Serena Williams. "It's a dream come true playing against Serena in the final of the U.S. Open. My team has been so supportive through all the ups and downs and downs and downs and downs", Williams said. But Andreescu is wary of that comparison. More importantly, she stayed in points - and games - enough to allow Williams to make mistakes. "I'm really proud of how I dealt with everything".

That theory remains to be seen, but who knows when Serena Williams, being the great and storied champion that she is, will surrender once and for all and give up the "hands-down greatest?"

Canada's Bianca Andreescu poses with the trophy after beating Serena Williams in the women's singles final on day thirteen of the 2019 US Open tennis tournament in New York September 7, 2019.

There were high hopes, as Serena was poised to take the first game, serving first, but a few unforced errors cost her that first service game and she never fully recovered. Williams did herself no favours by double-faulting eight times throughout the match.

Williams can also equal the legendary Margaret Court with 24 Grand Slam singles titles if she manages to beat her less-experienced opponent.

She is also still looking for her first championship - major or otherwise - after returning from the birth of her daughter.

Asked if she expected to win the US Open, Andreescu was frank.
