Apple sets launch of streaming, gaming services

Apple Arcade is almost here

"You can't find these games on any other mobile platform for subscription service, no games service ever launched as many games, and we can't wait for you to play all of that", product manager Ann Thai told the Apple media event in Cupertino, California.

Apple is in a "holding pattern" until it rolls out 5G phones with faster mobile data speeds next year, analysts said. It's less expensive than Disney's upcoming streaming offering, Disney+, which will cost $6.99 monthly or $70 a year, and Netflix's basic plan, which costs $8.99 a month.

Given the relatively slim number of shows on Apple TV+, some analysts say its immediate effect on the streaming market is likely to be limited. You can check out the full list of shows that Apple has in development here.

Apple TV+ will go online on November 1. Apple announced new iPhone, iPad and Watch models on Tuesday. It was where the Cupertino giant first introduced the idea and at today's iPhone launch event it has revealed the launch date and pricing details for the same.

However, it was Apple TV+'s low subscription price that caught the attention of investors. "We look forward to giving audiences everywhere the opportunity to enjoy these compelling stories within a rich, personalised experience on all the screens they love", said Jamie Erlicht, Apple's head of Worldwide Video. Meanwhile, streaming content provider Roku (ROKU) swooned by as much as 12% on the TV+ news.

Apple is also likely to unveil updates to the iPhone and Apple Watch. "Apple Pay launched in 17 countries in the June quarter completing our coverage in the European Union and bringing us to a total of 47 markets now", he told the analysts. Prices start at US$399 or US$499 with cellular service and will be available to order Tuesday and in stores September 20.

Apple managed to grow its overall revenues, albeit by a modest one per cent, to US$53.8 billion, even as iPhone revenues plunged almost 12 per cent in the April-June period. "I can also see Apple leaning heavily on its supply chain to eat some of the cost".
