North Korea fires projectiles after offering talks with US

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un guides the test firing of a new weapon in this undated

Trump announced he had fired Bolton a day after North Korea signalled a new willingness to resume stalled denuclearisation talks with the United States, but then conducted the latest in a spate of missile launches.

The JCS said they received warnings of the twin launches at 6:53 am and 7:12 am Korean time.

The projectiles traveled about 330 kilometers, the statement said, adding that USA and South Korean authorities are analyzing additional details the launch.

It said South Korea will monitor possible additional launches by North Korea. Japan's Defense Ministry said in a statement that its territory was not threatened.

Trump and Kim had agreed to restart working-level talks during a meeting at the Demilitarized Zone dividing the Korean peninsula in June, but those talks have yet to begin.

Hours before the launch, Choe Son Hui, North Korea's vice foreign minister, said Pyongyang is willing to talk with the United States but warned Washington needs to come up with fresh ideas or risks jeopardizing the negotiations.

But Choe said the United States has to produce an "acceptable calculation" or risk the end of the talks, apparently a statement aimed at pushing the United States toward making concessions to North Korea, such as on the economic sanctions.

Although US President Donald Trump has played down previous tests this year, saying he did not believe short-range missiles violated any agreements, now-ousted national security adviser John Bolton had said even short-range launches by North Korea are banned under United Nations resolutions. The previous seven launches have revealed short-range missile and rocket artillery systems that experts say would potentially expand its capabilities to strike targets throughout South Korea, including US military bases there.

In August, two projectiles were launched.

DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name. At one point he referred to them as "very standard." "We'll see what happens", Trump said. "We wish that he would stop that".

"We urge North Korea to honour the commitments they have made to engage in meaningful negotiations with the U.S. and take steps towards complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization".

What Happened: North Korea test-fired two projectiles into the Sea of Japan early on September 10 local time, Yonhap reported.

She said if the proposals don't satisfy North Korea, dealings between the two countries may come to an end.

"North Korea knows the ROK-US alliance plans to rapidly respond with counterbattery fire; if they can shoot and move a 600 mm MRL-capable TEL quickly, that complicates counterbattery planning and improves launcher lifespans in a conflict", Ankit Panda, an adjunct senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists, wrote on Twitter.
