Idaho officials confirm 2 cases of vaping-related illness

According to Seattle & King County Public Health, it's the first confirmed vaping-related case of severe lung disease in Washington state.

In the meantime, the agency is instructing doctors to start asking patients about their vaping history and urging patients who vape to monitor themselves and seek medical attention for symptoms of cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting.

It's an outbreak impacting mostly young people.

Numerous patients are teenagers. Antibiotics didn't work, and it's not clear yet whether steroid drugs helped.

No single device, ingredient or additive has been identified. And on the black market, the liquid can contain a combination of marijuana and nicotine. Instead, they suspect chemical exposure. And vape juice contains many possible culprits.

Researchers do believe Vitamin E or THC-infused in vaping products could be to blame for the recent surge in vaping-related illnesses, but the CDC and FDA reinforce that, right now, it's not certain that's the reason for all the new health issues. Suppliers say it dilutes vape oils without making them look watery.

Vitamin E acetate was a substance present in topical consumer products or dietary supplements, but data were limited about its effects after inhalation, the FDA said. They wrote up their findings about six patients in the New England Journal of Medicine.

E-cigarettes are generally thought to be safer than traditional cigarettes, which kill up to half of all lifetime users, the World Health Organization says.

'We must not stand by while e-cigarettes continue to go unregulated.

"E-cigarettes are not completely risk-free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm", he mentioned. Some early-stage laboratory and animal studies suggest these flavor particles can damage the lungs, airways and blood vessels, but more research is needed to better understand how human bodies react to them.

Much less is known about the contents of THC oils and how those chemicals behave when heated. "I cannot stress this point strongly enough - these illnesses can be life-threatening".

The Truth Initiative reports: "Overall, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults smoke at rates up to 2.5 times higher than straight adults, due in part to targeted marketing by Big Tobacco".

Dr Rosemary Leonard explains that research late a year ago by Public Health England shows that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than traditional cigarette smoking.

U.S. health officials believe vitamin E oil in THC-infused e-cigarette liquid may be triggering lung damage, but much is unknown about other vapes.

Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA's Centre for Tobacco Products, told the New York Times: "If you're thinking of purchasing one of these products off the street, out of the back of a vehicle, out of a trunk, in an alley - or if you are then going to go home and make modifications to the product yourself using something that you purchased from some third party or got from a friend - think twice".

"These are unregulated products, and when you do not regulate something, you don't know what you're getting. And they'll continue to target the LGBTQ community - and LGBTQ kids in particular - because they don't see us as people; they see us as 'scum.' The products may change, but Big Tobacco will continue profiting off our deaths until we stand up and fight back", Beatriz Valenzuela, spokesperson for Equality California, told the Los Angeles Blade.
