Brexit deal is "essentially impossible" ever, says Downing Street source

Brexit deal is

Johnson's official spokesman told reporters the pair had a "frank exchange" and that discussions were at a "critical point".

European Council President Donald Tusk has angrily addressed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a tweet that Brexit is not "some stupid blame game" and directly asked him where he wants to take the fast deteriorating negotiations.

Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney at the European Union headquarter in Brussels, Belgium, on September 27, 2019.

On the markets, the pound lost around 0.5 percent of its value against the dollar within moments of Downing Street's comments.

Johnson's opponents in Britain accused the government of deliberately undermining the Brexit talks.

The Irish government published a 2020 spending plan with a $1.95 billion relief fund based on the assumption that there will be no agreement.

On Tuesday Mr. Johnson's office and several cabinet ministers blamed the European Union for the impasse, suggesting the bloc wasn't serious about negotiating or giving ground.

The court concluded there was no need to take any pre-emptive action against Mr Johnson because he had given legal assurances that he would abide by a law compelling him to ask the European Union for an extension if no divorce deal had been agreed.

James Gunn , the writer-director of Marvel's " Guardians of the Galaxy " franchise, took to Twitter to express his disappointment.

Our view has been that an early election seems inevitable given parliament's failure to agree on any form of Brexit; the government's recent loss of its majority reinforces this view.

The turmoil helped send the pound to the lowest level in a month against the euro on Tuesday.

Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, European Union, addresses the United Nations General Assembly at United Nations headquarters Thursday, Sept. 26, 2019, in NY. Lawmakers will return on Monday for the State Opening of Parliament, which includes a speech delivered by Queen Elizabeth II outlining the government's legislative plans.

They said the United Kingdom was not willing to move away from the principle of providing a consent mechanism for Northern Ireland or the plan for leaving the customs union, and if the EU did not accept those principles, "that will be that" and the plan moving forward would be an "obstructive" strategy towards Brussels.

The EU has been standing firmly with Dublin on the border issue, but if there is room for manoeuvre ahead of the Halloween deadline, any tweaked agreement is not guaranteed to pass a UK House of Commons vote, where a number of competing factions of MPs have taken particular stances on what they will, or will not, accept on the Brexit front. The officials added that if Ms. Merkel's concerns "represent a new established position, then it means a deal is essentially impossible, not just now but ever".

The agreement effectively created an invisible border between north and south, satisfying republicans who want a united Ireland and unionists who want to keep the status quo.

The source added: 'We will also make clear that this government will not negotiate further so any delay would be totally pointless.

The Spectator magazine quoted an unidentified source in Downing Street as saying that Britain would take an aggressive stance towards the European Union if Brexit talks break down, possibly even by withholding security cooperation. But, under English law, he also is required to seek an extension if he doesn't have a deal by October 19 - something that may still force him to seek a delay and hold a general election before going back to Brussels again.
