The exterior of Dicks Sporting Goods a chain of retail stores in over 600 locations in Lancaster Pa. CEO Ed Stack said the company destroyed $5 million worth of assault-style rifles as the chain has moved away from selling firearms

Not only did Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. stop selling assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines in 2018, it destroyed the assault rifles that it had in its inventory.

"I said, "You know what?" He made the decision after he found out that one of his stores had sold the Parkland gunman a shotgun, even though it wasn't used in the tragedy.

America's close ties with the right to bear arms has proven a hot topic for citizens and corporate entities alike.

Stack told CBS the controversial decision cost his company about a quarter of a billion dollars in revenue.

Since the massacre in Parkland, corporations have responded to the public's growing demand for gun control measures. Dick's, though, has been one of the most proactive.

The interview was part of a segment about how business leaders like Stack are stepping up to reduce the national gun violence epidemic, something Stack also addresses in his book, "It's How We Play the Game". "It's just, it's ridiculous". "If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them", Stack recalled. "Take a Stand. Make a Difference", on Sunday.

Later, when the company discovered it had sold a shotgun to Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old accused of shooting 17 people to death at a south Florida high school in early 2018, Stack stopped selling firearms to anyone under age 21. Stack said that after the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, he made the decision to remove the AR-15 off store shelves.

"We've got the whole category under strategic review to see what we're going to do with this category", he said. The company, which his father started as a fish-and-tackle shop in 1948, has sold guns since long before Stack started working there in 1977.

Just a day before that shooting, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people and injuring 24 others. During the interview, Stack talked at length about his evolving approach to the sale of guns, something the company had done for decades before it began to pull back.
