School first: Homework first for high-schooler Gauff before WTA semi-final

Homework on her mind Coco Gauff was thinking of studies soon after making it to her first WTA semis

American teenager Coco Gauff stunned top seed Kiki Bertens to advance to her maiden WTA semi-final with a 7-6 (1) 6-4 victory at the Linz Open in Austria on Friday, then went back to her hotel to do her schoolwork.

Gauff is the youngest woman to reach a WTA semifinal since Nicole Vaidisova won Tashkent in October 2004.

She will next play Andrea Petkovic, who beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-4, 6-1.

The Latvian has endured a miserable season and has dropped outside the top 70 but, working with former Wimbledon victor Marion Bartoli, this week has seen a resurgence.

In her first appearance since Flushing Meadows, playing as a lucky loser, Gauff has reached the quarter-finals of Linz Open and will break into the world's top 100 next week.

"It's insane", he said after the match.

"This is insane", Gauff added after winning in 92 minutes. "I think I'll keep using it until it doesn't work so well anymore".

They relocated to South Africa in 1993, just as white minority rule was ending and the country was opening up to the rest of the world.

Gauff is also in the doubles draw alongside her familiar partner Caty McNally.

"This was one of many highest-level matches I've performed".

Gauff, 15, faced 10 break points but recovered well to fend off nine of them against Petkovic in the semifinal, before sealing victory on her second match point.

"I've had a lot of luck and happiness here", she added.

Gauff maintained control throughout over the eighth-ranked Bertens to earn her first victory over a top 10 player.

The youngest-ever victor of a WTA Tour title was two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin, aged just 14, at Portland in 1977. That proved to be the lone break of the match as Gauff was never pushed to deuce in her final four service games.

Gauff had thought she would be involved in Luxembourg WTA qualifying this weekend, but finds herself with more pressing duties in Linz instead.
