China's Xi reiterates support for Hong Kong leader in Shanghai meeting

The bill sparked concerns freedom of Hong Kong is being eroded, and led to widespread protests, including one with a reported almost two million voters.

China's President Xi Jinping expressed a "high degree of trust" in Hong Kong's embattled Chief Executive Carrie Lam after the two met in Shanghai on Monday months after the city has been rocked by protests that have pitted locals against the police.

She said Xi had expressed his care and concern about Hong Kong.

"The news agency quoted Xi as demanding "...unswerving efforts to stop and punish violent activities in accordance with the law to safeguard the well-being of the general public in Hong Kong".

Hong Kong returned to China under a "one country, two systems" formula which guarantees its freedoms for 50 years. He was beaten by several men with hammers in October after his group organised mass rallies against the extradition bill. "In simple terms, it will not happen", she said.

Lam was originally supposed to return to Hong Kong after attending the second China International Import Expo in Shanghai, but on Sunday her office said she would meet with Chinese government officials in Beijing on Wednesday. However, most of the demonstrations reportedly did not pan out because of the police taking positions to search and arrest people.

In early hours Monday, police fired tear gas after some protesters threw bricks and other objects at them in another district.

Guy Fawkes Day, also called Bonfire Night, is celebrated with fireworks and bonfires every Nov 5 in Britain, when effigies of "guys" are burned, marking the night in 1605 when Guy Fawkes was arrested for a "gunpowder plot" to blow up the British Parliament.

"We should ask why they want to fight for universal suffrage in the first place, everybody knows it's the Americans telling them to do that".

As regards perfecting the system for appointing and replacing SAR leaders and other principal officials in the two regions, we believe Beijing is going to press ahead with this initiative. Again, no details were given.

It also can not be ruled out that Beijing might directly impose the national security law of the mainland on Hong Kong or establish a new mechanism relating to national security issues in the days ahead.

A day after Halloween, China has vowed to prevent foreign powers from interfering in the affairs of Hong Kong unrest and will carry out acts of "separatism, subversion, infiltration, and sabotage".

The protests, which pose the gravest challenge to Xi since he came to power in 2012, have received broad support. Twelve police officers were also injured during the escalation of violence over the weekend, and more than 300 people were arrested.

There have been many injuries in the protests, but no deaths.

In one bloody incident outside a mall in the eastern suburb of Taikoo Shing on Sunday, a man with a knife slashed several people and bit off part of a politician's ear.

A 61-year-old retired civil servant who declined to give his name said he felt protesters were trying to fight an unwinnable war against an unassailable opponent.
