Join astronomers to watch Mercury Transit

During a transit, Mercury passes between Earth and the sun, becoming a small, round silhouette against the yellow glow of the solar disk. Viewers there will be able to watch the entire transit, as will people in Central and South America and some parts of West Africa. The transit or passage of a planet across the face of the Sun is a relatively rare occurrence to view. But when far tinier Mercury does it, it's referred to as a "transit".

Mercury will take five-and-a-half hours to cross in front of the sun on Monday. "The sun can cause permanent eye damage in only a second". Many local astronomy clubs will provide the public with the opportunity to see the transit using specialized, properly-filtered solar telescopes. The Besser Museum is holding a free viewing party for anyone who wants to witness the transit, and they have special telescopes for people to use.

According to the Delta College Planetarium, the next transit of Mercury won't be until 2032 and the next time Mercury passes this close to the center of the sun will not be until 2187. Even with solar eclipse glasses, Mercury is too small to be easily seen with the unaided eye.

Mercury's 5.5-hour transit starts around 7:30 a.m. Monday and ends around 1 p.m. Australia and most of Asia are out of luck.

Tesla’s Electric Pickup Truck Will Debut On November 21st
More than one observer has noted that the styling of the Tesla "cybertruck" pickup would put it right at home in that movie. The reveal will happen November 21 , near the SpaceX facility (and Tesla's Design Center) in Hawthorne, California.

Venus transits are much rarer.

On the morning November 11, United Kingdom amateur astronomical societies and public observatories will be running events where members of the public can safely enjoy the transit, as well as live webcasts of the spectacle.

Here on Earth, several video streams will be running, courtesy of the Slooh online observatory, the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, TimeAndDate.com and the Virtual Telescope Project 2.0.

In many instances, our line of sight is aligned so that telescopes on Earth can detect the tiny dips in starlight as an exoplanet transits its host star.
