Don Cherry and Sportsnet part ways following divisive remarks on weekend broadcast

The NHL apologized for Cherry's comments on Sunday, saying: "Hockey is at its best when it brings people together".

"Don's discriminatory comments are offensive and they do not represent our values and what we stand for as a network", Sportsnet President Bart Yabsley said in a statement earlier Sunday.

Cherry is a former ice hockey player and coach who launched his career as a commentator for the game in the 1980s.

In fact, the latest controversy around arguably the most famous broadcaster in English-speaking Canada underlines that Rogers Media and its sports subsidiary, Rogers Sportsnet, should've politely nudged Cherry into retirement when they first got the rights to the pricey National Hockey League package in 2013.

"I take part and I wear poppies and I donate and I have great respect for veterans, especially from the Canadian (military)", he said "If anybody has a comment like (Cherry's), that immigrants do not have an interest in Remembrance Day, I think it's not right".

"You people love - they come here, whatever it is - you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey".

Following the initial backlash, Cherry declined to apologize for his comments, telling the Toronto Sun, "I have had my say".

Don Cherry will no longer be appearing on television screens across Canada on Saturday nights. Ken Campbell of the Hockey News wrote Monday that "sentiments among Rogers staffers is that there will be a lot of talk about moving on from Cherry this week". Cherry is reported to have told Warmington that he was hurt to be fired today of all days, given it is Remembrance Day. "Just the same, as I have no problem, with people who hunt seals and seal meat", Cherry said on social media.

"I know what I said and I meant it".

Others noted many newcomers have relatives who fought and lost their lives in various conflicts, including the world wars, something Cherry overlooked in his comments.

He finished by reminding fans: "Remember to wear your poppy to honour our fallen soldiers... thumbs up". So I owe you an apology too, that's what I want to emphasize. "I say, 'Let's go outside.' She said, 'I'm not embarrassed.' I said, 'I am"'.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie called Cherry's remarks "despicable" on Twitter.

Cherry has often used Coach's Corner to express his right-leaning, Canadian nationalist views, including climate change denial, misogyny and dismissing his critics as "left-wing pinkos". "I sat there, did not catch it, did not respond".

The Canadian Broadcasting Standards Council said it was so overloaded with complaints about the segment that it exceeded the organization's technical processing capacity.
