Uber CEO ripped for calling Khashoggi murder a 'mistake'

In an interview for the Axios HBO show, released Monday morning, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi seemed to downplay last year's death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. He noted that Uber has also made mistakes, including with self-driving cars, which caused a woman's death in 2018.

In March 2018, one of Uber's self-driving test vehicles struck and killed a female pedestrian in Tempe, in the U.S. state of Arizona.

"The CIA suggested the crown prince had a role in ordering an assassination".

Asked about the CIA's assessment of the crown prince's involvement, Khosrowshahi said: "I didn't read that part of the Central Intelligence Agency report. but I think from a Saudi perspective, they're just like any other shareholder". "People make mistakes, it doesn't mean that they can never be forgiven, I think that they've taken it seriously".

Saudi Arabia is Uber's fifth-largest shareholder and the head of its sovereign wealth fund is also on the company's board of directors.

Mr Khashoggi was killed and dismembered by Saudi intelligence officials and a forensic doctor previous year at the consulate in Istanbul.

On 2 October 2018, Khashoggi entered the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, where he was murdered.

The remarks came during a discussion with Axios co-founder Mike Allen about Uber's relationship with Saudi Arabia, one of the company's largest investors.

In Memoir, Haley Alleges Some on Trump Team Urged Resistance
Haley said Tillerson and Kelly should've merely quit if they didn't like what Trump was doing. "And it was offensive". The men explained that they knew better than Trump, Haley said.

After initially offering several contradictory explanations over Khashoggi's fate, Riyadh said amid global outcry that the journalist was killed and his body dismembered after negotiations to convince him to return to the kingdom failed.

He then compared Mr Khashoggi's murder to an accident in which one of Uber's autonomous vehicles struck and killed a pedestrian past year.

"I personally have valued his input greatly", Mr Khosrowshahi said of Mr Al-Rumayyan.

He called Khashoggi's murder "reprehensible" and said it "should not be forgotten". "So I think that people make mistakes".

In his Monday tweet, Khosrowshahi said he told Axios after the interview: "I said something in the moment I don't believe".

"A United Nations expert earlier this year concluded that Khashoggi's death was "an extrajudicial execution" and that there was credible evidence" that the crown prince and other high-level officials were individually liable. "Now we're a public company".

"A mistake is accidentally not replacing the toilet paper if you're the last to use it", another user wrote. He then argued that everyone should be forgiven, and defended the Saudi government's investment in Uber - all while being given multiple opportunities to backtrack. The sick and sad irony of Uber CEO [Dara Khosrowshahi] calling his murder by the Saudi regime a "mistake".

But when probed by Axios if he would have gone if the two had not clashed Khosrowshahi replied: 'I don't know if I would have'.
