YouTube Could Terminate Creators Who Are Not "Commercially Viable" for the Platform

YouTube Could Terminate Creators Who Are Not

The new terms of service for YouTube state the following - "YouTube may terminate your access, or your Google account's access to all or part of the Service if YouTube believes, in its sole discretion, that provision of the Service to you is no longer commercially viable". It's also notable here that this is the only time Google uses the term "commercially viable" in the whole updated Terms of Service.

Furthermore, YouTube may or may not alert the user as to the reason for the termination. YouTube has been very upfront about this new update and has mentioned a thorough and detailed answer on why they would terminate their Agreement with bad actors.

YouTube says that it is doing this to make terms clearer and easier to understand, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

While the video hosting platform has yet to release a direct statement on the situation, the official YouTube support Twitter account sent an automated response to MrDalekJD's original thread, which only further angered people.

This is a major worry for a lot of content creators out there, including us. Owing to the possible subjective interpretations of the broad "commercially viable" wording, YouTube creators are anxious that the company will make use of the new policy to terminate accounts it doesn't "like for any reason".

The platform began reaching out to its users via email last week, notifying them about the site's new terms of service.

Alibaba's Singles' Day sales have already passed $25 billion
More than 200,000 brands are participating, offering deep discounts to a projected 500,000 million shoppers. It took only 63 minutes and 59 seconds for sales to hit 100 billion yuan ($14.3 billion).

As written, these broad terms essentially allow YouTube to "cherry-pick" what accounts aren't pulling in enough advertising dollars and revenue. Those who deal with politics or anything on the controversial spectrum could be deemed "no longer commercially viable" as a catch-all, due to the fact that this content usually gets limited or no ads based on YouTube's guidelines.

Although the fine print sounds scary, YouTube told PCMag that nothing has actually changed. Notice the terms are worded to cover anyone who has an account, not just its content creators.

The terms of service now come with an updated section on parental responsibility when children use the platform, and have more clearly stated the age requirements per country for using YouTube.

There's also reason to worry for content creators who don't fall under the commercially viable banner because of the kind of content they produce.

As for 2020, we could start to see a change in how YouTube operates with respect to content curation and content visibility.
