Hong Kong police end 12-day siege on school campus

Hong Kong Airlines Ltd is the first airline to hold back salaries because of the revenue squeeze

The Nov. 19 bill being decried by Beijing-the Hong Kong Human Legal Rights and Democracy Act-was sponsored by Sen.

Trump's signing of the bill grew his popularity in Hong Kong, with the Trump-Rocky photo serving as a fitting symbol of the demonstrators' approval of the president. "Wednesday, President Trump did what his predecessors would not do-defend America from a China that is going after us".

"I and my government are listening to our people with a view to resolving some deep-seated problems in Hong Kong through dialogue", she said.

"It is also in serious violation of global law and basic norms governing worldwide relations".

Trump said that "certain provisions of the Act would interfere with the exercise of the President's constitutional authority to state the foreign policy of the United States", and that the US administration will "treat each of the provisions of the Act consistently with the President's constitutional authorities with respect to foreign relations". "My administration will treat each of the provisions of the act consistently with the president's constitutional authorities with respect to foreign relations".

"If the U.S. takes sanctions against Hong Kong based on those future reviews, China will take countermeasures", he said.

The legislation slaps economic sanctions on individuals who commit human rights violations in Hong Kong and bars them from entering the US. "At the same time, the signing statement was a message to [Chinese President] Xi Jinping that Trump would be careful in implementing the new law, and would do so in a way that would not harm his friendship with Xi".

So far, the two sides have sought to keep Hong Kong and trade issues separate, said Tu Xinquan of the University of International Business and Economics.

Congress also passed legislation (S.2710) that would prohibit the export of control equipment to Hong Kong police, who have been accused of using violence and heavy-handed tactics to quell demonstrations.

Trump has not devoted much attention to Hong Kong, and Chinese leaders likely understand he had little option politically but to sign the legislation.

Protesters, most of whom were in regular work clothing, blocked highways and chanted "Free Hong Kong!"

Trump's signing of the Hong Kong bill is raising doubts that there will be any trade deal, even the so-called "Phase One". The uprising was initially sparked by a bill that would have allowed some citizens to be extradited to mainland China. Beijing has reacted harshly against his move.

Le also blasted the passage of the bills as a "nakedly hegemonic act" and a "serious violation of worldwide law", according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, before urging Washington to refrain from implementing the legislation to "avoid further damage" to Sino-U.S. relations.
