Facebook to allow transfer of photos, videos to Google Photos

Facebook has launched a new tool which allows you to easily transfer your photos and videos to another service, although it's only available to folks in Ireland initially - although a wider rollout will happen soon enough. Facebook is now testing the feature will users in Ireland and the worldwide availability of the feature is planned for the first half of 2020.

Today, we're releasing a tool that will enable Facebook users to transfer their Facebook photos and videos directly to other services, starting with Google Photos.

The pilot begins this week in Ireland (where Facebook has been under investigation for alleged violations of European Union data privacy law).

Lawmakers in the U.S. are pushing a bill that will improve online data portability.

Facebook has allowed members to download their data since 2010.

Facebook also adds that the tool will work with other services and it's easy to guess which are on the top priority list - iCloud and OneDrive.

Privacy and security are key considerations, the social media giant notes, so the data transfer process will involve encryption, and users are asked for a password before a transfer can take place.

Facebook said in September it supports data portability and is planning to build new tools around it.

"For example, a company using the Data Transfer Project framework can send an existing data type to a new service by simply creating a new Data Transfer Project importer for that data type", said Software developer William Morland.

The wider Data Transfer Project consists of three main parts - a set of shared data to represent each content type, a system to handle authentication and a task manager to ensure everything is put together properly.
