Protesters march to up pressure on Hong Kong government

After a rare lull in demonstrations following the polls, police on Sunday fired tear gas to disperse thousands of anti-government protesters as residents chanted "revolution of our time" and "liberate Hong Kong".

Hong Kong's protests are fuelled by years of seething anger over China's perceived erosion of liberties in the semi-autonomous city.

Hong Kong police have arrested 5,890 people as a result of the protests.

As one part of the march ran into a police blockade, officers warned protesters not to proceed, saying they were straying from the permitted route.

Some demonstrators clashed with the police.

The rally followed two other marches earlier in the day as protesters sought to keep the pressure on Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam (林鄭月娥) after the wins by the pro-democracy camp in the district council elections on Sunday last week and USA support for their cause.

Ahead of Sunday's rallies there were calls from organisers for people to remain "highly restrained" with fears of a return to the violence that has marked more recent months in the political crisis.

Police made several arrests as the tear gas sent hundreds fleeing towards the harbour. Protesters dug up paving stones and threw them in the street to try to slow the police down.

More tear gas was sacked at night after dozens of hardcore protesters set up roadblocks and vandalised some shops and restaurants linked to China.

That appeared to jolt Juventus into action and Turati needed an impressive save to keep out a Ronaldo free kick. The 41-year-old, making just his fifth start this season, was at fault in Caputo's goal just after the break.

Hong Kong's protests have been relatively peaceful during the two weeks around the November 24 election but could turn violent again if the government doesn't bend to the demands.

Tensions started Saturday night after police used pepper balls against protesters and a man was hit in the head by an unidentified assailant while clearing the street.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said she'll accelerate dialogue but hasn't offered any concessions since the elections.

In more normal times, several USA naval ships visit Hong Kong annually, a rest-and-recreation tradition that dates back to the pre-1997 colonial era which Beijing allowed to continue after the handover from British to Chinese rule.

The two earlier marches Sunday appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump for help and demanded that police stop using tear gas.

The Chinese government also sanctioned US-headquartered, non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch for supporting extremist, violent activities in Hong Kong, Ms Hua added.

China has warned of strong countermeasures and Hong Kong's government has slammed the US move as unwarranted meddling in its affairs.

Some donned Trump logo hats and T-shirts as protesters unfurled a banner depicting the United States president standing astride a tank with a United States flag behind him.

China will ban USA warships and military aircraft from making stops in Hong Kong in the wake of Washington passing legislation supporting the territory's pro-democracy protesters, the country's Foreign Ministry said Monday.

In the article published earlier yesterday, Bachelet urged authorities in Hong Kong to conduct "a proper independent and impartial judge-led investigation into reports of excessive use of force by the police".
