Riot Games to Pay $10 Million to Settle Gender-Discrimination Lawsuit

The laswsuit began in November of a year ago, with two female employees who had worked at the company's Santa Monica offices suing over violations of the California Equal Pay act.

The League of Legends developer will be paying every female employee that has worked under then in the last five years.

Riot Games has settled their gender discrimination lawsuit for $10 million, the LA Times reports. They could not show any details at that time, but this time it seems the matter has come to light.

The proposed $10 million settlement is pending court approval. It looks like Riot Games is outwardly committed to change, but time will tell if company culture is going to continue on a path for the more positive in the future or if things will stay the same, albeit with a bit more cash lining some of the female employees' pockets.

The suit was filed by two employees in November 2018.

The lawsuit alleged that female employees were discriminated against because of a sexist "bro culture" fostered at the company.

L.A. -based Riot Games is a subsidiary of China's Tencent Holdings.

When it announced the settlement in August, Riot said it believed it had a "strong position to litigate", but that "it was the strongest statement we could make... that we're prepared to go over and above in order to move forward". The company has worked hard over the previous year to address the culture of sexism, creating a new recruitment, hiring and promotion structure, bringing in third-party culture consusltants and creating a new diversity director role, as well as adding women in leadership roles.

The lawsuit claims that culture led to sexual harassment and misconduct.

The company has about 2,500 employees. However, several employees believe numerous improvements are undercut by the fact that some senior male employees accused of misconduct are still in the company. In October, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new bill making it illegal for companies to require employees hired after January 1, 2020 to sign an arbitration agreement.
