Nadler says committee vote on impeachment possible this week

Tom Brenner Reuters House Speaker Nancy Pelosi answers questions about impeaching President Trump

US President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to once again lambast the impeachment probe led by Democrats in the US House of Representatives, accusing them of trying to change the impeachment guidelines two days before the start of the hearings.

But Stephanie Grisham, a White House spokeswoman, said the report was the result of "a one-sided sham process". Trump on Sunday derided the investigation and highlighted counter-arguments by his allies on news shows.

Republicans have set up a large sign with the words "Where's Adam?" in white letters against a black background, signaling their displeasure that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff will not be testifying as they wanted.

The impeachment inquiry centres around whether Trump froze almost US$400 million in military aid to pressure Ukraine to publicly announce separate investigations into alleged interference in the 2016 USA presidential election and former vice-president and political rival Joe Biden's son Hunter and his work on the board of a Ukrainian energy company. He is all but certain to be acquitted in the Senate, where Republicans hold a majority. Judiciary committee lawyers will also be laying out evidence, an indication that special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation could somehow be incorporated into the articles of impeachment.

That would put it on a fast track to a trial before the Republican-controlled Senate, where Trump is expected to prevail. "This is a farce".

"We have a very rock-solid case", House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, a Democrat from NY, told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union" Sunday.

Nadler rejected that criticism and expressed disappointment, saying in a statement: "The American people deserve answers from President Trump".

Then, lawyers for the Intelligence Committee, Daniel Goldman for the Democrats, and Stephen Castor for the Republicans, will present for up to 90 minutes divided between the two lawyers.

The focus on Schiff is because the anonymous whistleblower, who sparked the inquiry about Ukraine, asked Schiff's staff how to file a complaint with the inspector general for the intelligence community.

Less than one year away from the 2020 election, McCarthy said that Democrats aren't listing to their constituents in making their decisions on impeachment.

Talks between the USA and DPRK on the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula stalled amid an arms test conducted by Pyongyang, although it has not carried out nuclear tests or launches of long-range missiles since these negotiations started previous year.

Representative Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" that the best case can be made with the evidence gathered in the Ukraine investigation.

Instead, Democrats suggested they could use Mueller's findings to demonstrate what they describe as a pattern of behavior by which Trump has sought repeatedly to encourage foreign involvement in USA elections and then move to stymie investigators.

"Certainly if we're talking about obstruction of justice we can't ignore the obstruction of justice that is laid out in great detail in the Mueller report", he said. Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., told NBC's Meet The Press that will happen soon.

One other event expected on Monday may not permit the Democrats to retain center stage, however.

Or should impeachment also reference the findings of, for example, former special counsel Robert Mueller, whose conclusions included what Democrats called obstruction of justice by Trump? That report cited 10 incidents in which Trump sought to hinder the investigation, but did not draw conclusions on whether Trump obstructed justice.
