Human Remains Found During Search For Chilean Plane With 38 Onboard

Rescue planes including this Black Hawk helicopter and ships continued searching waters off the southern tip of South America for the missing plane

Chile's Air Force on December 10 said one of its cargo planes had crashed with 38 people on board after going missing in an isolated area between South America and the Antarctic, with the chance of finding survivors looking "difficult".

Carrying 17 crew and 21 passengers, the C-130 took off from Chile's Punta Arenas on Tuesday afternoon, bound for a military installation on King George Island, just off the coast of Antarctica and about 770 miles southeast of their departure point.

Chilean officials said Wednesday that they located some debris believed to be from the air force plane that went missing on Monday.

Vragresterne was found 30 kilometers south of the place where the plane last had radio connection on Monday. No survivors are expected.

Other pieces of wreckage were spotted by a Brazilian naval vessel assisting in the search for the C-130, the Almirante Maximiliano, in waters roughly 518 km (200 nautical miles) from Ushuaia, Argentina, Efe news reported.

The brazilian ministry of defence has in a communication stated that one of its ships also have found debris and personal belongings, which probably can be traced to the plane.

The air force lost contact with the plane when it was some 700 kilometers from Punta Arenas and 500 kilometers from its destination. However, the Air Force had said that the weather during the flight of the missing plane was good because if it wasn't then they would've canceled its flight.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Chilean military sent fighter jets in an expansion of its search after large rolling waves in the icy Drake Passage and low clouds had complicated the mission the day before, authorities said.

The aircraft would have been about halfway to the Antarctic base when it lost contact, officials said, adding that no emergency signals had been activated.

The Vatican said Pope Francis was following the situation closely and keeping the families of the missing in his prayers.

Those aboard the plane were to perform logistical support tasks for the maintenance of Chilean facilities at the Antarctic base, the Air Force said.
