US, UK, Canada issue travel advisories for India's Northeast amidst rising protests

"Government curfews are in place in some areas", the advisory said. Transport may be affected in various parts of the region.

France, Israel, the US and the United Kingdom have issued travel advisories for nationals travelling to India in view of the ongoing protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill passed in the Parliament.

"There has been this agitation (against) illegal migration from Bangladesh over many years, it's a pretty old issue and the concern in Assam is that people will become a minority in their own land if they haven't become that already", he told AFP.

The law's enactment has stirred up protests across India, but the eastern part of the country, where movements against Bangladeshi immigrants have raged for decades, has been among the worst hit.

Canadian and British governments have also issued similar advisories. Hundreds of people protesting against the amended Citizenship Act since morning blocked roads in and around the Sankrail railway station and also set a few shops on fire, police sources said.

Two others had been killed during the violent protests against the CA in Guwahati earlier this week. The ministry's view was made public after the categorical refusal by the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh, among others, to implement the law in their states.

Police on Friday fired tear gas and used baton charges to disperse scores of students demonstrating at Jamia.

The passage of the bill also sparked angry scenes in both houses of parliament this week, with one lawmaker likening it to anti-Jewish legislation by the Nazis in 1930s Germany.

The Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill (FACAAB) and Asom Nagarik Samaj (ANS) said they are preparing the papers and will move the apex court soon.

The Citizenship (Modification) Act, which intends to make it simpler for non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan to acquire Indian citizenship, has been accused by rights teams and opposition events of being discriminatory and violating the constitutional proper to equality.

Two Bangladeshi ministers have cancelled their planned visits to India and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has postponed his scheduled summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Assam in wake of the violent protests.
