California sends quake response experts to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

It follows a 6.4 magnitude quake Tuesday that killed one person, knocked out electric power and caused widespread damage.

Puerto Rico was hit by a series of new earthquakes on Saturday including one which measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Scott said more than 6,000 people were in emergency shelters. The quake, just off the USA territory's southern Caribbean coastline, was felt throughout much of the island, including the capital San Juan. Almost a million people were still without electricity and hundreds of thousands were without water, said California Governor Gavin Newsom in a statement on Saturday.

- A 5.8-magnitude natural disaster shook Puerto Rico on January 6, 2020, toppling some structures and causing power outages and small landslides but there were no reports of casualties, the US Geological Survey said.

The government estimates that the earthquakes have damaged more than 559 structures and caused $110 million in damage. Reporter David Begnaud tweeted that camps set up by the Puerto Rico National Guard, which will house upwards of 500 evacuees each, are going up in five affected cities.

The first woman in Academy Awards history to take home the prize did so 82 years after the first Oscar was handed out. You can see John Cho and Issa Rae announce all of the nominees for this year's awards in the video embedded above.

Puerto Rican Gov. Wanda Vazquez declared a state of emergency last week and is seeking the USA government to declare the earthquakes a major disaster, which would free up more federal funding for aid as damage as of last week totaling up to $110 million.

No reports of injuries or causalities were made so far but media said that it could be felt across most of the island and resulted in buildings damage and cut the power in multiple municipalities.

This home was also destroyed in Guanica, a town on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico.

More aftershocks are expected. As the island prepares for more quakes in the coming days, here's what we know about the latest disaster to devastate the USA territory. "It's a complex zone".
